Video: Shane Dorian On His Slater-Inspired 5′2″ Quad

Looks like our favorite Big Island brudda Shane Dorian has hopped onto the “go short or go home” bandwagon. While Shane-O (seen here shredding El Salvador at the Billabong Las Flores Resort) and Slater may rave about the ultra short boards, the rest of us are left to ponder: “Can I even paddle that thing, much less catch a wave on it?” My thoughts are that, while I’m sure the little sticks are really fun to ride, they just look too short and the guys seem to be holding back a bit. Then again, who’s gonna argue with their rippability until we actually ride one…Is my board done yet, Kelly?

Let us know your thoughts, would you pony up and buy a 5′2″ quad? Are these guys ripping or tripping?

Shane-O & Slade rip on these toys !!!!!

  • Lance Says:

I’ve been riding a …Lost Rocket 5′5″ for the past few months and sad to say I don’t ride my regular shortboards anymore. I use it in anything from ankle slop to head high lowers and it works great. Really loose and fast. So if you ever want to ride your regular shortboards then I suggest you don’t get one of these because they will be left in your garage untouched for a long time if ever to be used again.

  • har Says:

what are the other dims on his board? width and thickness? I’ve been wanting a small quad…just a few inches bigger than 5′2″ though!

  • stu Says:

don’t be fooled kiddos… despite being listed at 5′9″, Shane’s really only like 5′2″.

  • geoff Says:

Does anyone notice these guys only ride these boards frontside? Lance, how does your Lost go backside?

  • Burton Says:

Does not madder Dorian is Rippin, Burton

  • jcote1271 Says:

I checked out some of Kelly’s boards in Tahiti recently and I gotta say they’re starting to look pretty sick…and a bit longer. He also has five FCS boxes in there.

  • eduardo Says:

what are the other dimensions on this board??

  • kech Says:

Shane is still on the World Class Level. Stoked to see him jump on different equipment. These boards have great Flow. Four fins are here to stay. Being a fellow board builder Just want to say Thanks to guys like Slates and Shane for trying out new designs. It opens our minds to also explore! Four fins are fabulous they are of the now! Modern equipment regenerated and super fine tuned!

Shane-O sha-redddddding! Sick shiz mate, minus the rap song!
Couple of those turns, Shane looked like Slates! Or could it be that Shane and Slates are the same human all this time? “Face Off II: Battle of the Shred Sled” Coming to a theater near you THIS SUMMMERRRRRRRRRRRRRR

ps Losness is still a kook

  • Hapa Boi Says:

Pretty sick footage! Looks like a fun board to ride, but kind of looks like a skim board. Doesn’t it? Slater can you make me a skim board too? :P Small boards = less power

  • Thomas James III Says:

shorter boards = wimpier looking turns.

  • furley Says:

trippin….the only thing these small boards do is make old guys feel like they are flaring again..real surfers ride three fins ….parko, mick, dane enough with these lame marketing gimmick..

  • don Says:

i think it feels better than what it looks.

  • jeff in CA Says:

Dane rides twin fins, quads, and I think I’ve seen some pics of a 5er for good measure. Marketing? nah, don’t think so.. And Shane’s turns of that 5′2″ are bad as fuck - sprayin 12′x 12′+ is super wimpy

  • jeff in CA Says:

To Lance - just got my 5′6″ rocket on craigslist and it’s money

  • Lance Says:

    Jeff in CA

That makes me so happy to hear that you like your knew Rocket. Have fun on it

  • Lance Says:

    To Geoff,
It works just as great backside. The reason why Shane’s footage is of all rights is because there are absolutely NO lefts in east El Salvador. I was at the same surf camp they filmed this at and it is impossible to find any lefts out there.

On another note if you guys ever think of surfing in Central America I highly recommend the Las Flores Surf Camp where this footage was taken. It’s like a giant Lowers and very machine like. Half way through the wave my toes would cramp up it’s so long. And the staff are amazing and take great care of you.

  • Pierre Says:

Get back on the CT Shane-o!

  • Anonymous Says:

The video is sick. Who is the dude singing though? Where can I get his stuff I want to buy his album crazy flows . . .

  • Fritttle Says:

Currently riding a 6′4 twin and have not been back on my shortb or step up all Spring and this is North Shore Oahu I’m talkin about. bottom line is the lower rocker, flatter bottoms work insane as they hold so much free speed. My twin has the fins set real far back so it has alot of drive and carve without washout or over slide. I want one of these templates in the film, perhaps a 5′8 with a twin set like my board and wammo, wave destructo….

  • FantasySurfoff.com Says:

Oh so thats what they are supposed to surf like.
Damn Shano, you look like your ready for the tour again.

  • jacques Says:

    sick i want one
where can i buy these sick boards

  • gabo Says:

    those turns looked ill

  • Fritttle Says:

He’s the whole deal with age to back it all up. At 39, I love to see the “older” guys take to the groms. Way to rip Shane Dorian! Big, small, regular board, new design, tow, paddle, etc.

  • Fritttle Says:

Yeah I’d like to know his height and weight and the numbers on that 5′2. Anyone?

  • john"JC" carper Says:

JC here. We’re not trying to start a movement, just have fun. We’ve found that short, wide and thick does the trick. There is as much volume in that “TR-D” as his 6′0″ ,and with the super flat rocker, full nose and tail, it paddles as good as his 6′0″. These are a great “go to” board for the summer and will definatly re-define how we look at a surfboard, not forever ,but at least for a few years. Even an old dinosaur like me has gone from a 6′3 to a 5′10 and lovin’ it…jc

  • Warren Gowell Says:

Haha I just contacted you about one of the boards.

  • H Says:

    thats ridiculous.. Legend

  • H Says:

gimmick? these guys been ridin traditional boards ther whole lives.. i think these two guys can try new things.. legends bro.. respect
