Offshores in Huntington Beach in March? Santa Ana like winds were on tap for the better part of Saturday at the 2010 Vans Pier Classic. Quarterfinalists are decided with one day left.
Hawaiians Tyler Newton (Kauai, HI) 19, and Macy Mullen (Milileni, HI), 30, took the day’s top honors by posting the highest scores in men’s competition.
Chris Waring smashing the day’s highest single wave score of a 9.00 out of 10 while young Hawaiian Dylan Goodale, 18, issued the upset of the day by defeating the defending event champion Mike Losness.
Matt Costa (Waianae, HI), 16, stamped his authority as an early round standout in Ezekiel Pro Junior competition when he blasted the highest single-wave score of the event, a near perfect 9.60 out of 10 en route to his Round 2 heat victory.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 2-Star Vans Pier Classic presented by Jack’s Surfboards saw former ASP World Tour surfer Ben Bourgeois (Wrightsville Beach, NC), 31, crush the day’s highest scores while ASP Pro Junior talents Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA), 19, and Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA), 15, denoted some of the day’s top performances.
Day 1 of the 2010 Vans Pier Classic is on at 8am. With plenty of swell in the water and some of the best pros ready to rip the Huntington Beach Pier to pieces, tune into the live Web cast all day.
