A surfer had his board nipped by a shark at a Kauai beach Tuesday morning, according to officials.

Stephen Schafer had been kiteboarding about 100 miles north of Miami, when a lifeguard spotted him in distress about 500 yards off the beach. Paddling out on a surfboard to help, the lifeguard found the 38-year-old bleeding and surrounded by several sharks.
Witnesses said the 22-year-old waved his hands frantically in the air before being dragged under by a shark after paddling on a surf board off the coast of Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape.
"I thought, 'I gotta get him off my leg,' so I pounded him. I was just hoping he wasn't going to chomp all the way through," he said.
A Maui County news release says a 54-year-old man was attacked shortly after 6 a.m. while surfing in an area known as "Kalama Bowls" in Kihei.
