A 16-year-old Kihei boy was bitten in two passes by a shark while he was body boarding just outside the Kahului Harbor breakwater Sunday afternoon, police said.

"I thought, 'I gotta get him off my leg,' so I pounded him. I was just hoping he wasn't going to chomp all the way through," he said.

A Maui County news release says a 54-year-old man was attacked shortly after 6 a.m. while surfing in an area known as "Kalama Bowls" in Kihei.
