Hawaii’s Sunny Garcia provided most of the spectator excitement on the opening day of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) six-star Prime rated Drug Aware Pro presented by Rusty at Margaret River today.

Eight of the world’s top ten ranked surfers, including reigning world champion Mick Fanning and Western Australia native Taj Burrow, are scheduled to compete in the biggest surfing event ever hosted in Western Australia: the Drug Aware Pro Margaret River taking place March 16 – 21, 2010

In an unprecedented move of tactics, Brazil’s Pablo Paulino snapped his board during his heat, didn’t have a backup board anywhere so instead of packing it in, the dude swam to a nearby buoy and ganked Kirk Flintoff’s stick!

You gotta love that Occy is still battling the groms (albeit selectively) and ripping at the tender age of 43…
