Board Channel Robber

Channel Islands

The Robber

From the mind of Rob Machado comes the Robber, another addition to Channel Islands’ fun short/wide boards that fly. Full and flat in front, thin and narrow in the tail. The tail is a winged swallow with spiral vee out the back. The board comes standard with hand-laid Twin Finner Future Fins but also works well as a thruster. This design was originally ridden in the movie Sprout.

Feedback: Should be ridden four to six inches shorter than your standard shortboard.

Designed For: Novice to expert surfers inknee-high to three-feet-overhead surf.

Board Channel Tangent

Channel Islands

The Tangent

The Tangent is the board design that Kelly consistently relied on to get the job done during his ninth World Title run with wins in solid surf at Fiji, J-Bay, and Trestles. It consists of single concave and comes with the popular and versatile squash tail, or Kelly’s preferred round-pin tail. During the quest for a ninth world title, Kelly and Al Merrick basically went off on “a tangent” when it came to board design. They tried many formulas, which involved one single constant: the rocker. They manipulated countless variables in design: vee bottoms, concaves, shrinking down the size and widening the board up, changing tail temps, fin angles, and finclusters all depending on the wave to be surfed.

Feedback: To change things up for small waves, we also suggest ordering the Tangent 2” shorter and 1/4” to 1/2” wider than your standard shorty.

Designed For: Everyday use by intermediate to expert surfers in waist to well-overhead surf.

The Whip

In landlocked neighborhoods, a man’s “whip” is his customized ride, his prized mode of transportation. Kelly’s prized “whips” made for less-than-perfect surf during his ninth World Title run were his 5’10” x 18 5/8”, and 5’8” x 18 7/8” x 2 5/16” swallow tails. Evidenced by Kelly’s phenomenal start with wins at both Snapper and Bells, this design came alive and skated over the fl at spots. This is Kelly and Al’s reworked version of the Flyer, with a few secret changes this board is faster and more forgiving. If you’re looking for a board that excels when your shortboard seems to bog, this is the board for you.

Feedback: Should be ridden three to four inches smaller than your shortboard, 1/4” wider, and the same thickness.

Designed For: NEveryday use by intermediate to expert surfers in knee to head-high surf.

Board Channel Rookie

Channel Islands

The Rookie

A favorite among CI’s top teamriders, this board’s performance has paved the way for memorable photo sessions and standout contest results. Like the Proton for Dane, the Rookie is
designed around state-of-the-art surfi ng by a powerful surfer and has a full rail with a curvy outline. Lower entry rocker and more tail fl ip out the back than the MBM+ and Proton, the Rookie is powered by single concave throughout.

Feedback: A great all-around shortboard from the fl at walls of Bells to the round beachbreaks of France.

Designed For: Novice to expert surfers in knee-high to three-feet-overhead surf.
