I'm getting a custom-shaped board as a hs graduation present and I was wondering if it would be better to get a step-up/travel board or a performance shortboard. I'm going to be around mostly small surf and my current shortboard is way too big (it's 6'9″ and i'm 6'1″ and 165 lbs) because I bought it used, but i also want a board to ride on bigger/hollow waves when they come around. I'm going to end up getting both eventually, but which would be the better one to get first?

Go with the performance short board. Otherwise, you'll end up with a brand new board you're only going to ride a few times a year.

I dont know how well you surf but i would go with your performance shortboard!probally a 6'3 for you at the moment. just bring your board in to the shaper to show what your riding now and tell him what type of waves your going to be riding in and how good you are. Hopefully the shaper will take good care of you. and remember dont be scared of a little bit more volume.
stay up
