At about 9:30 this morning, Nathan Fletcher was practicing for the Backdoor Shootout. Pipe is most dangerous when there is a long beach and a rising swell. Nathan took off on a medium sized wave (2' Hawaiian or head high), went up and hit the lip to do a layback snap. You could hear the snap of his femur from the beach. Off duty lifeguard David Wassel was off the porch of the Volcom House, running down the beach calling 911 on his cell, and jumped in the water with long blue jeans and a long sleeve shirt to rescue Nathan. David's quick action helped avoid tragedy. He is to be commended. We all wish Nathan the best and a speedy recovery.

The problem with doing nothing is that it is hard to tell when you are done.
