COMPETITORS AND SURF FANS
The first heat goes in the water at 8 a.m. on Saturday. This long-standing SSC Specialty Event has a rich history of the fiercest team competition seen in East Coast surfing. Yes, we still have the original perpetual trophy, which is gnarlier than ever. Last year's shortboard champions, Parrot Surf Shop proudly displayed the beast at the shop in Mt. Pleasant for the entire year. Is it time to bring it back over the bridge?! All surf shops, groups of friends, surf clubs or businesses from near and far are invited and urged to FORM A TEAM and sign up now!
Liquid Shredder Soft Surfboards are sponsoring the Team Challenge this year with long sleeve t-shirts, great food and awards, but we will never forget that the Team Challenge is dedicated to the memory of John Kalagian, owner of Barrier Islands Surf Shop, who passed away several years ago. This was John's favorite surfing competition and he always put together winning teams. This is just a small way of honoring the memory of someone so special within the Folly Beach surfing community and beyond.
The Team Challenge schedule will be posted on ssc.surfesa.org and follywaves.com by Friday, November 29.
Please read the entry carefully, it has all the team guidelines, directions, etc. If you have any questions, please call Nancy Hussey at 843.343.4047. New this year are DIVISION Based Teams as well as Open Teams.

Marsh Scholarship Winner
Congratulations to six-year ESA veteran Caitlin Lawson of Hilton Head for receiving this year's ESA Marsh Scholarship. The Marsh Scholarship Program began in 1981 by former ESA Executive Director Dr. Colin J. Couture to recognize and honor the accomplishments of the Marsh Family of North Carolina and young Mike Marsh in particular. Led by his legendary East Coast family and surfing's highly-respected matriarch, Bette Marsh, Mike set a pioneering example for students everywhere by earning his law degree while simultaneously and successfully waging his own personal battle with cancer. The purpose of the program is to offer financial aid to deserving ESA student surfers. The grants are awarded to ESA members on the basis of academics and U.S. citizenship, rather than athletic ability. Caitlin boasts a 4.63 GPA and is ranked third in her class at Hilton Head Preparatory School. Among her many academic accolades, she also is a member of the National Honor Society, a graduate of the Hilton Head/Bluffton Chamber of Commerce Junior Leadership Program, and the Homecoming Queen. However, she's just as solid in the water as she is in the classroom. Caitlin is three-time Governor's Cup Champion in Junior Women's Shortboard, two-time SSC/ESA Female Surfer of the Year, two-time ESA Scholastic Championships Finalists and two-time runner-up at the ESA Mid-Atlantic Regional Competition in 2005 and 2006. All the best, Caitlin. To learn more about the ESA Marsh Scholarship Program, visit surfesa.org/content/section/9/31/
