Junior World Champion to Remain Roxy Rider for Next Four Years
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – (December 5, 2008) – Australian teenage surfing sensation SALLY FITZGIBBONS (Gerroa, NSW) has re-signed with iconic surf brand ROXY after a lucrative four-year sponsorship deal was negotiated to continue their successful partnership.
The 2008 World Qualifying Series (WQS) champion shattered the sports history books this year by securing an elite berth on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour (WCT) well before the WQS season was halfway over; a feat never before achieved by either a female or male surfer. Fitzgibbons finished the WQS with an incredibly impressive 1600 plus point spread between her and her closest competitor at the end of the 2008 season.
The cementing of Fitzgibbons’ sponsorship with ROXY is a natural progression for the 17- year-old as she prepares to compete at the top level of world surfing next year.
“I joined the Roxy Team when I was 15, I’m turning 18 next month and starting my professional surfing career next year, so it’s an exciting time for me,” said Fitzgibbons. “To be traveling the world is a dream come true and Roxy’s world-wide network of people and support gives me a lot of confidence. It was an easy decision to re-sign.”
“Sally is a Roxy girl through and through,” says Danielle Beck, Director of Athlete and Sports Marketing for Roxy. “Even with all her accomplishments she’s still such a humble person and a great role model for the next generation.”
The competitive dynamo has proven a formidable all-round sporting champion, winning Gold Medals in the 800m and 1500m at the 2007 Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney before hanging up her track shoes for a full-time professional surfing career.
Just last month the stylish natural footer became the first surfer to win Gold Medals in both the ISA World Surfing Games and the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships as well as claiming the 2008 ASP World Junior Title.
“I have had three successful years with Roxy. They have provided me with experiences that have helped me grow. I am a Roxy girl at heart,” said Fitzgibbons.
“When you think of Roxy, it’s of girls having fun and successful surfers like Lisa Andersen and Sofia Mulanovich pushing the limits,” added Fitzgibbons.
“Sally has a confidence about her and is so natural in the water. In short, she embodies what Roxy is all about,” says Lisa Andersen, 4X World Champion. “I’m so stoked to have our Roxy girl Sally Fitzgibbons sign on for the long-term.”
ROXY is also excited by the future that will no doubt see more records smashed by the talented surfing young gun. Fitzgibbons will commence her 2009 WCT campaign at her sponsor’s own event the ‘Roxy Pro, presented by LG’ on Australia’s Gold Coast in February next year.
The Roxy surf team is off to a strong start for the 2009 season. Team riders Rosy Hodge (South Africa), Bruna Schitz (Brazil) and Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) have also either qualified or re-qualified for the 2009 WCT.
