College event number three went underway on December 6-7 at Ventura Harbor. This event proved to be the best event thus far this season. The waves this weekend were glassy with peaky rights and lefts in the 4'-6' range on Saturday to some 6'-8' plus on Sunday, although windier. Everybody seemed to have a great time from winding down in the evening in Isla Vista, to free surfing rippable peaks up and down the beach before and after their heats. The Point Loma surfers came ready and would walk away with the first place victory. Each event has been won by a different school and things should get really hot leading into event number four in Huntington Beach in January.

Some of the highlights from heats leading up to the finals were led by Max McIlwee of Saddleback College. Max in round one posted an 8.0 wave score for two blasts off the lip and finishing with a standard air. The wave of the contest for Men's Shortboard however was performed by Marty Weinstein who averaged a 9.33 for a right-hander where he completely disappeared in a deep tube on a bomb set and came spitting out. Troy Mothershead had the only perfect 10.0 in the contest in Longboard round one. Troy on a set wave had a great hang five in the pocket, straight into a long held hang ten, followed by a straight up re-entry to finish it off. Once again, Lipoa Kahaleuahi dominated the Women's division showing persistency and determination by winning all of her heats on the way to the final. She blew up on a right where she had three blasts off the lip in her quarter final posting a 9.66 wave score.

After being eliminated early in event two, Marty Weinstein came back with a vengeance and won every heat on his way to the final. Marty opened up with a floater and a tail release re-entry posting a 6.33 and backed it up with a filthy gouge on his second wave averaging a 5.0 for the one dynamic turn. Max McIlwee would make it close rifling off two turns and a frontside standard air averaging a 5.5 and his second wave posted a 5.0 which would be good for second place. In the Longboard final Troy Mothershead who also won every one of his preliminary heats opened his scoring with a nose ride and a blast off the lip earning a 9.0 wave score followed up by a 7.0 for a tip into a cutback and a backside blast to seal the deal. Chase Stavron was hot on his heels but settled for second. Lipoa Kahaleuahi won the College Womens division handily with an opening score of 7.0 for two rail cutbacks and followed that up with a one maneuver blast for a 5.0.

Great job everyone and see you at event #4 on January 24-25 at 9th Street in Huntington Beach!
