Honolulu, HI – David “Kawika” Watt and Dale Geldum, business partners in “Kini Beach, LLC” were surprised by the amount of waste being left behind on island beaches and in hotel rooms each year. These included recreational items such as floats, inner tubes, straw mats, and Boogie boards, and literally any other recreational device found on the sand and in the water at the end of the day.
With her extensive background in Visual merchandising and store design, Dale's “eye” and talent for using her retail knowledge, and creative skills provides tremendous backbone to their venture. A graduate of the renowned Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Dale's sense of style and business are formidable strengths.
David had recently returned home to Honolulu after the devastating fires of San Diego, CA. Experienced in Construction and Dredging; he is well acquainted with the soil and the spirit of the “Aina” of his native Oahu and Maui.
We challenged ourselves by asking how we could combine our background in a useful, productive manner for all to appreciate.
Together, the two principals of Kini Beach are committed to successfully developing a worthwhile product that is environmentally sound and aesthetically pleasing.
The answer soon presented itself. They began to research the amount of recreational beach related items used by tourists and locals alike, and found there to be close to 3,000 yards of debris left behind on state beaches and in hotel rooms. A calculated equivalent would be to lay some 30 full-standard swimming pools next to each other, side by side.
Originally targeting the smaller boutique hotels along the Waikiki corridor, the two had very little encouragement or interest from local proprietors. Not to be put off, David and Dale decided to approach the larger Waikiki hotels instead. After an inspiring meeting with Jim Heather, General Manager of the “Outrigger Waikiki On the Beach property”, Kini Beach soon emerged with a design tool to intelligently recycle the old, while creating a fresh new line of totes, handbags, tees and accessories.
Today, Kini Beach Hawaii is in partnership with four other Outrigger properties, and in negotiations with other major resort hotels in Waikiki and with the blessing of Kahu Curt Kekuna, Sr., Pastor of Kawaiha’o Church of Honolulu.
Kini Beach has more projects are on the horizon. The two are presently entertaining the idea of creating Tee shirts and other items all made with inspiration from their recycled finds, dedication, and homespun drive. Kini Beach now has the Green light for further ingenuity.
