“I was trying to get my third second (place) in a row,” he joked. “I wanted to keep the streak alive. Now, I guess, I'm keeping the dream alive for the Slater family.”

His triumph, worth $2,000 — which he donated to his brothers for the World Skin Cancer Foundation — took place behind the Hilton, just a stone's throw from Lori Wilson Park. That was the site of Slater's first contest as a little grom in Rich and Phil Salick's 1977 National Kidney Foundation event.

Slater edged out Melbourne Beach's Blake Jones and Kyle Garson in the closing seconds of the 30-minute heat.

Slater showing he still could rip 2 foot crap threw a front-side hack that had enough spray to sound a tsunami warning.

“I was trying to hold back,” Slater said, still kidding. “But it was cool to surf here and see my friends. It was all fun.”
