(Huntington Beach, Calif.) December 15, 2008 – Quiksilver congratulates
team-rider Kelly Slater for winning the final Association of Surfing
Professionals (ASP) World Tour stop of the 2008 season, the Pipeline
Masters, last Friday. This is Slater’s sixth Pipeline Masters title,
bringing to close a storied year in which he clinched his ninth world title
only nine events into the season.
Slater defeated fellow American surfer Chris Ward in the final, bringing his
total number of victories on the ASP World Tour this year to six of 11
events. Slater defeated Timmy Reyes in the semifinals and former Pipeline
Master Jamie O’Brien in the quarterfinals. Slater paddled out in eight to
10-foot waves at Pipeline four times in the contest’s final day, beating
Ward with a score of 14.00 to 7.23. Slater's heat totals in the three heats
prior to the final were 19.00, 18.63 and 19.40 - all out of a possible 20
points. The next scheduled event on the Men’s World Tour, the Quiksilver
Pro Gold Coast in Australia, opens the season on February 28, 2009.
The bizarre presence of the number nine this year is not lost on the
champion surfer; “My season is all about nines,” Slater said. “Winning this
event nine years later…I needed only a ninth place in the ninth event of the
year to win my ninth ASP world title - it's crazy.” Drafting off of the
surf legend’s apparent out of this world talent is a dedicated website which
provides insight into the mind of the champion. Discover Slater’s nine
