Sofia Mulanovich spreads hope and perseverance in her native Peru through surfing in this 16mm film

Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California (December 16, 2008) – Sofia, the award winning, 52-minute documentary that uncovers the spirit of surfer Sofia Mulanovich, can be taken home on DVD this holiday season. This 16mm film tells the story of an unlikely heroine who inspired a new energy within her developing nation of Peru.

“This film is about more than just me or surfing, it is an inspirational story about a movement in a whole culture. My favorite part of the film is that it features people so close to me, who are a big part of who I am today,” Mulanovich says of the film’s story line that follow seven people, who have influenced or been influenced by the 25-year-old. “Hopefully, by sharing this story more people can enjoy the beauty, energy and love of the people and the country of Peru.”

In Spanish with English subtitles, Sofia demonstrates how Mulanovich embodies Peru's new wave toward progress, proving the statement, Si, se puede! (Yes, you can!). Her World Title in 2004 and continued successful surf career on the world stage has ripped apart cultural barriers, by mobilizing an entire generation of young people to believe that anything is possible. Unbeknown to Sofia, she would become one of the biggest role models in Peruvian history, simply by doing what she loves: surfing.

In 2006, Sofia: a Documentary swept up honors across categories including Best Documentary at the Surfer Magazine Surfer Poll Awards, Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking – Documentary at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Best Sports Action Film at the Jackson Hole Film Festival, winner of the Jury Award at the Delray Beach International Film Festival and finally Best Emerging Filmmaker at the X-Dance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Mulanovich finished up the 2008 World Tour with 5593 points, having stood on the podium at four WCT events this year, as well as gracing the cover of Surfer Magazine and winning her fourth consecutive Surfer Poll Award. With the contest season ending at the Billabong Pro in Maui, Hawaii, Mulanovich is looking forward to heading home to her friends and family in Peru. This winter she’s focusing much of her energy on a new charitable effort that will provide equipment and supplies to disadvantaged schools in Peru.
