The sad and senseless story of Emery Kauanui and his untimely demise come to an end with the sentencing of the man who killed him with a punch to the head—Seth Cravens. The worst part of the whole thing is that they were all friends, and now one’s dead, one’s locked up for 20+ years, and the other guys have to live with what they’ve done.

Seth Cravens, the La Jolla man convicted in the alcohol-fueled beating death of a professional surfer, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison today.
Cravens, 23, was found guilty Nov. 18 of second-degree murder and other charges in the death of Emery Kauanui, 24.
Kauanui died in a hospital four days after he and Cravens got into a fight in front of Kauanui’s La Jolla home on Draper Avenue around 1 a.m. on May 24, 2007. Cravens and four other men had gone to the home, intent on retaliation, after Kauanui had spilled beer on one of the men earlier in the evening at the La Jolla Brew House and the two got into an argument.
Cravens punched Kauanui once in the jaw during the fight. Kauanui was knocked to the ground and suffered a fractured skull. The jury concluded that Cravens was guilty of “implied-malice murder,” which means that Craven’s was aware that his actions were dangerous but acted anyway.
He was also convicted of four counts of assault by means likely to cause great bodily injury and one misdemeanor battery, stemming from earlier offenses.

Justice will be served right up that punk Cravens’ fat a_ _ for the next 20 years! He took the advice of his parents to not take the plea deal and now look at him. With parents who are convicted thieves and liars it’s no wonder why Seth turned out the way he did. They are so arrogant and think they are above the law. His parents have a lot to do with the way he turned out. Partial blame to Seth and the rest of the blame on his parents heads forever! The wanna be rich and upper class Cravens have finally got what they deserved. What a disgrace to the whole Cravens family. The whole world now knows that the Cravens family are convicted thieves and murderers. How shameful and embarrassing for the Cravens family, but with a patriarch like Dad Cravens teaching his famliy through his bad examples and with a wife who backs him up, it really is no surprise that your family has turned out the way it has. Hopefully, you Cravens have been humbled now and will walk with humility. If this does not humble the Cravens family then nothing will. Seth showed no real sincere remorse in his apology in court today. He is so phony just like his parents the wannabe La Jolla high society. Question for Dad Cravens…Was it really worth ripping off millions of dollars from thousands of innocent people so you, your wife and your family could live in upscale La Jolla? Your life has been lived in search for worldly gain and worldly praise. Well welcome to the world you’ve created for yourself and your family.

It looks like Cravens will have to continue his Bird Rock Bandit chapter in prison. But I’m not too sure if they will take him very seriously in there. He might be taken seriously for a good fudge packing if you know what I mean.

You’re wrong. Cravens will do well in level 4. He’s precisely the type of recruit the Aryan Brotherhood is looking for.

F***ing scum bag. Rot there.
May 1st, 2009 at 9:03 pm
I don’t think the Aryan Nations recruits jews.

The death was a result of a permeditated beating. All of the Bird Rock Bandits had decided to make the trip to provoke a beating. It dosen’t matter who did what or who said it was self defense. It was premeditated…and a death from a premeditated decisioin is outright MURDER. Prosocution proved Seth’s character as a bully who had no disreguard for other people including women. This guy is scum and was lucky to get only 20 years. I think all of his buddy bandits should also have gotten long jail sentences and Seth should be put away for life with no parol. Had they not decided to make the trip in the firt place … then Emery would be alive today.

To bad he didn’t join the Marines out of high school
May 1st, 2009 at 11:23 pm
He. is. Innocent.

Seth Cravens is a sociopath - i don’t understand why his parents are sugarcoating their sons barbarism.
The parent of this kid that died should spend all their money to pay off inmates to torture and sodomize Seth Cravens in prison. Would 50k be enough for a payoff?

The BirdCrapBandits VS the Crips? Or how about MS13? hahaha! Oh yea, better yet, NeoNazi?

How sad it is for a young man to have bullied the community and had gotten away from it for so long. I commend all those who took courage to testify of his wrong doings, it wasnt easy but you have spared many innocent people the trauma of this out-of-control brat. Shame on his parents who are in denial of his manipulative acts. Seth’s unemotional apology was prideful and disgusting just as his attorney’s bad conduct performance. Her aggression gives off a bad persona for all good lawyers with respect and integrity for life. In the end Seth and his attorney deserves a “guilty” plea.

He’s Samoan Caucasian you dumb idiot. Get a clue before he punches you in the jaw
May 2nd, 2009 at 3:41 am
It was a shame that the 5 bullies got away with this for so long, but let’s be clear, surfer dude was no angel either.
They are lucky (the bird rock bandits) that he didn’t have a gun when they came to his house, or there might be more lives lost over stupid violence.
RIP, take your 20 years like a man, by dropping your soap!
May 2nd, 2009 at 6:49 am
not fair the other 4 got off and the fifth guy got 20 yrs. all were involved not fair
May 2nd, 2009 at 10:45 am
I’m guessing a number of these posts came from people who knew these young men. Sounds like a lot of venom released here. They were probably much worse than expressed on the show last night.
May 2nd, 2009 at 11:20 am
LOL..i love to see that punch connect from Jail…either way the dude will be getting raped , without vaseline…ugh
Whats funny he was trying to terroize kids from La Jolla…..why not be a rela tough guy and drive a coup hours to Rosecrans in Compton or South Central..and last a week there terrorizing people…not trying to rough up Lajolla, which is 90210 “lite”….his face would of been on a curb in compton or south central….he is not that tough..

I agree with you, Shirley. It doesn’t seem equitable that four of the men received such light sentences. None of them took steps to intervene. Some of the other young men took punches. While I do not know any of these young men, I do have some trouble with the implied-malice verdict. Given the amounts of alcohol and narcotics involved I am not convinced that Seth (or any of the other young men) were cognizant of the amount of harm that could be inflicted. I doubt he’ll really spend 20 years incarcerated…not the way our justice system works.
May 2nd, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Big deal in the outside world but chunk of candy inside the wall. Let ol Seth find out what’s it’s like to be pushed around and ganged up on now.
Too bad his buddies aren’t right there to get their share. They were part of this mess and they were involved.
May 2nd, 2009 at 7:59 pm
what did the other boys get?
May 2nd, 2009 at 8:27 pm
I’m so glad that he is in jail!!!! The other 4 should also be in jail but since they are white and rich they got off! Will the system ever be fair!!!!
May 2nd, 2009 at 9:03 pm
What a bunch of dirtbags. You could tell in every one of their voices that none of them were sorry for what they did. They were professional bullies who all deserved more than what they got. Seth Cravens is a dirtbag and his parents are bigger dirtbags for being unaware of what their son did, raising him poorly and being in such extreme denial when he ended up being screwed up.
I’ve partied at those bars in La Jolla and PB and you see doodpooners like Seth and Company “rolling deep” (ie in a group of five) for protection so they can say what they want, threaten guys, harass girls, etc. Hopefully they learn a little bit from these douchebags.

Saw the show last night. Loved all the pics of the BRBs flashing their dumb signs. Well Seth you can be as gangster as you dare in prison. Something tells me you’ll be shown just how white bread wonder bread your La Jolla gangster a** is in the company of some non posers.
May 3rd, 2009 at 4:35 pm
20 years he’ll be out in less then ten every sentence gets cut down they count each day as two and then subtract more for good behavior
the most he’ll do is 8 or less. Nobody ever serves their sentence fully theirs good behavior theirs early probation trials. someone I know got a five year sentence for an accidental car crash that killed someone got a five year sentence was out in 3 months.
May 3rd, 2009 at 9:01 pm
You’re right, the Neo-Nazis are not going to accept any Polynesian into their group. Besides, take Seth away from his crew (I will not insult gangs by calling them a gang) and he is just another fat punk.
If the Bird Flu Punks would have been anyone they won’t have been picking on rich punks like themselves, they would have been in Compton.
Seth is nothing like his crew. I have never seen an inner city gang that could not have smashed the Bird Flu Punks into the sand.
May 4th, 2009 at 9:22 am
Seth,
Just a suggestion. Never wipe or wash your butt in prison. Change your name to the StinkyButtBandit. That might keep you safe.
May 4th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Rest in Peace
Seth’s measley 20 years isn’t enough. Fck Orlando, Eric, Yankee, and Swan.
The memories live on forever. your brother is doing big things now. his music is popping.
I love you man
May 5th, 2009 at 1:17 am
Seth looked so retarded throwing up gang signs. He is what he is - a suburban punk and he can’t change that no matter how much he tries to look gangster.
May 5th, 2009 at 11:34 am
This man got what he had coming to him…and justice was served…but search Kerry Walker Story and see where justice was denied as in soooo many other cases in our country.
May 5th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
poor poor seth has he ever done something good in his life?
May 26th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Seth Cravens has been a menace to society for too many years. It was only a matter of time before he killed someone because he bragged about killing someone on his Myspace page. Someone like Seth Cravens, thinks it’s cool to hurt or kill innocent people. I’m sure he thought if he did murder someone it would be something he would be praised for and recognized for with his homeboys. He was all about seeking recognition like his phony parents, who stole millions of dollars from innocent people just so they could afford to live in “prestigious” La Jolla. Seth was shown very early on in his life, by his parents on how to get recognition from the world by hurting innocent people. Seth is a true product of his pathetic upbringing. His thinking and actions have finally gotten him 20 years to life in prison for murdering an innocent human being, who did not deserve to die! God will forgive you Seth, but I don’t know if the world will ever be ready to.

I don't know these guys, but they sound like a bunch of spoiled brats. I mean how hard can it be living in La Jolla California (as surfers) calling a nice place like Bird Rock your hang spot. Gang signs? I mean really? Total douch bags.
