OFFICIAL ASP PRESS RELEASE
SEIGNOSSE, France (Friday, September 25, 2009) – The Quiksilver Pro France presented by Orange, Event No. 7 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, has been called off for the day, following the completion of Round 2.
With only small, two-to-three foot (1 metre) surf on offer today at Les Bourdaines, only three heats were completed today, with event organizers opting to hold for better conditions in the coming days.
Ben Dunn (AUS), 23, current ASP World No. 26, surfed one of the strangest heats of the Quiksilver Pro France thus far. His opponent, Chris Ward (USA), 30, who had already missed his Round 1 heat due to scheduling confusion, overslept this morning and failed to show up until 15 minutes into the 30 minute heat.
“Well, it definitely plays with your head,” Dunn said. “Wardo missed his Round 1 heat and I thought he was going to show up for today’s heat because I saw him yesterday, but he said he overslept or something. It was still pretty even when he arrived though as I couldn’t get any waves.”
With half the heat remaining, Dunn would ignite, seamlessly blending high-speed floaters and rapid-fire turns on his backhand to amass the day’s highest heat total, a 14.50 out of a possible 20.
“I wanted to get some scores on the board before Chris (Ward) turned up, but there just weren’t any waves,” Dunn said. “He made a couple mistakes and went right and I was able to put a few scores on the board. It’s an important event for me in terms of ratings and I’m stoked to get through to Round 3.”
Dunn will face Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), 27, in Round 3 when competition resumes.
Roy Powers (HAW), 28, current ASP World No. 26, faced O’Neill teammate and fellow ASP World No. 26, Tim Reyes (USA), 27, in a tightly-fought Round 2 heat today, just edging the Californian out, 11.93 to 11.16.
“It’s pretty weird that we both ride for the same company and are rated the same and met in Round 2,” Powers said. “I don’t know what the odds of that are. It’s too bad for Tim (Reyes) as I know he’s having a tough year, but it’s an important result for me and I’ll take the win. Timmy looked like he was trying to pack in more maneuvers on his waves and I was focusing on adding more power and throwing more spray and I guess it worked out.”
Powers will next battle Dane Reynolds (USA), 24, in Round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro France when competition resumes.
Heitor Alves (BRA), 26, current ASP World No. 24, dominated the opening heat of the day, deftly navigating the lumpy beach break peaks to eliminate Jay Thompson (AUS), 26, from Quiksilver Pro France competition.
“I am so happy to make that heat, I am looking to make a good result here and I am stoked things went well this morning,” Alves said. “I was looking for the lefthanders which I like surfing and I got the better ones. Today’s conditions are better with less current so it’s all good. I thank all my family and girlfriend for the great support.”
Alves will take on Jordy Smith (ZAF), 21, in Round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro France.
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 9am to assess conditions for a possible Round 3 start.
When competition resumes, up first will Bede Durbidge (AUS), 26, up against 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie Nic Muscroft (AUS), 27, in Heat 1 of Round 3.

SERIOUSLY WARD????….. You overslept??? Well the next time you have a NSSA competition, we'll make sure your Mommy knows what time your first heat starts so there will be no "scheduling confusion"… oh, let's not forget to set your Transformer alarm clock so you don't oversleep again. It's okay little buddy, you'll get the hang of it…. or maybe not.
September 25th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
First Wardo get spanked at Lowers…then this! Maybe he should go back to partying hard and beating chicks in Big Bear.
Transformer Alarm Clock, classic.
September 25th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
that's not dane, that's tim boal i guess
September 25th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Yeah Ward! Who do you think you are showing up late (or not at all) for your heats!!!!!
This just makes me like Wardo even more! He should quit this lame ass tour and just surf huge barrels around the world. He is one of the best when it comes to waves of consequence.
Or maybe he should get a Transformers alarm clock so he could surf 2 foot onshore shitty beach break waves around the world.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Uh, Wardo doesnt beat chicks in Big Bear, he takes care of that in Mammoth
September 25th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
It's not a question if he can surf two foot slop or not… it's that he has a commitment to the World Tour & to his sponsorship, who in fact is paying to get his lazy ass on a plane, fly across the world and to do his job. I agree, he would do much better surfing waves that are more suited for his style… or maybe some couch surfing in Mammoth. Maybe he should just drop off the tour… Andy did… and who cares if he needs time to "find himself".
Well at least Ward still has one fan left. Go BOLTS!!!!!!

Load Blower (bolt thrower, whatever),
"waves of consequence" I bet you mutter those words to yourself when you're falling asleep in your mothers dingy basement…staring at a poster of Wardo while playing with you puka shell necklass "yeah! waves of consequence". 'Trilla' is on-point here…anyone who commits to the world tour should at least show up and half ass it before turning into a full-fledged burn out (see Bruce Irons & Kalani Robb).
The fact that the waves were not going off is no reason to hate on the WCT…aka THE DREAM TOUR.
Bottom line is that these guys get to travel the world and surf, setting your Transformer Alarm Clock is the least you could do. Shit! Mexicans in my neighborhood wake up a dawn to stand near Home Depot in hopes of work…wardo can't get out of his 3-star hotel room in time to Surf?
Gimme a Break Load Blower (bolt thrower, whatever). Now go get your fucking shine box!
September 25th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
wardo likes to blaze a lot… thats explains half of it
asp wct is his job and he gets paid ~ $5000 to get a 33rd.. people are on the tour for different reasons it'd be fucking boring with all the same characters, especially if they all were like Taylor Knox..
as for trilla… Ward is sponsored by Lost… not fucking quiksilver or oneill… his commitment to his sponsor does not require such a respectable and presentable image.

Twonboi,
Not to burst your bubble…But Lost, Oneill, Rusty, Metal Mullisha are all part of a Licensing Conglomerate called The La Jolla Group. Although their Marketing might say otherwise they re not hanging with Randall at lowers smoking bowls, they re in NY wearing Armani Suits going over 3rd Quarter Sales appeasing share-holders. Shine Box, get it.

Townboi,
Not to burst your Bubble, but Lost, Oneill, Rusty, Metal Mullisha are all part of a Licensing Conglomerate called The La Jolla Group. Lost's Marketing does a good job pretending that they re at Lowers smoking Bowls with Randall. But in actuality they re in Irvine scrambling to meet 3rd Quarter Sales and report back to shareholders.
I promise you for the money they pay Chris Ward they want him to 'represent (in) a presentable image.
TWS don't hate on my posts and delete them! Yeeeesh

clever
September 25th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
chris ward is nothing more than Davo's boring little brother. Who really cares if he shows? He'll be sitting next to that other Irons guy this time next year anyway and dead inside 10 years.
September 25th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
Doesn't Wardo have a trial he needs to get to in Mammoth???
For all the Wardo Haters, If he would have won that heat vs. Dunn you would all be talking about how Wardo is the man….I know he parties pretty hard but like townboi said, he's an unpredictable character thats fun to watch unlike a lot of the CT guys, it's good parody.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
d kitten, you sound very smart and knowledgeable. You must know everything about the industry and it sounds like you're an industry insider. Can you tell us what Wards sponsors pay him? Or can you tell us what company you work for and what they pay the riders? I'd love some industry insight.
Thnaks,
D's Nutz

The most interesting man in the world is not Wardo, it's Roy Powers, cuz he managed to qualify. Tom Whitaker is also very interesting…
