International Talents Drop Perfect Scores In Pumping Puerto

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Oaxaca (Friday, November 14, 2008) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 3-Star PXM International Vans Pro continued to filter pumping six foot (2 metre) surf to the famed Puerto Escondido beachbreak today, allowing two perfect 10-point rides along with several other near-flawless scores.

The PXM International Vans Pro is the last of the ASP WQS events held in North America, with all surfers on the ASP WQS vying for one of the top 15 positions by year’s end. A top 15 finish earns surfers a position on the coveted ASP World Tour.

Ryan Turner (Huntington Beach, CA), 29, who posted the event’s highest heat total yesterday, was on fire again today, netting a perfect 10-point score while topping yesterday’s high heat total of 18.20 with today’s near-perfect performance of an 18.93 out of a possible 20 point score.

“I actually think it was a little better yesterday,” Turner said. “It’s still as good as it gets for a contest and those are the best scores I’ve ever gotten in a WQS. I’ve never gotten a perfect 10 in a WQS.”

Turner’s scores continue to improve as he becomes more familiar with the lineup at the Mexican Pipeline and if his standout performances persist, he will continue to be a threat to the event’s top seeds.

“I think you just learn to spot the good ones and try to position yourself for them because good sets are breaking in different spots,” Turner said. “You just have to be in the right spot, so there’s a lot of luck still involved.”

Manuel Selman (Renaca, CHL), 19, who is currently finishing his first year on the ASP WQS, earned the day’s second perfect 10-point score with an amazing barrel-ride. The impressive performance by the young Chilean marks the first perfect 10 in Selman’s professional career.

“That’s my first 10 in a WQS event,” Selman said. “As soon as I saw that one I thought, this is a good one, but I may be too deep. So, I just had to go straight and keep pumping. I’m stoked! That was the best wave I’ve ever gotten in a contest.”

The fourth day of the PXM International Vans Pro will see action pick back up with Heat 13 in the Round of 64.
