He’s survived a number of scrapes with the law in Sydney, but Bra Boy Koby Abberton admits his stint in a US jail hit him particularly hard.

Abberton, who was sentenced to three days in Honolulu’s Oahu Community Correctional Centre on November 21, has finally admitted he “did the wrong thing” after he was convicted of assaulting an off-duty police officer in Honolulu on March 8.

The big wave surfer has told today’s edition of Who magazine “jail is a terrible place - no matter who you are. You’re not a name, you’re a number - it’s just not right.”

The 30-year-old maintains he was defending his friend Adam, 17, during a fracas that erupted outside the Epic Bar in the city’s Chinatown district.

“I’ve always tried to prevent anyone who is younger or weaker than me from getting hurt and this was no different,” he said.

“I had no idea the guy I hit was a policeman, I just wasn’t going to stand there and let a kid get beaten up. But I do understand that if you do the crime you have to do the time.”

Abberton revealed he was subject to a humiliating strip search during his jailing, before he was thrown into a cell with three “massive Samoan guys”.

“There’s nothing tough about being in jail - it’s just horrible,” he said.
