This years 2nd Annual Malibu Invitational kicked off Friday Night with a bang at Duke’s Malibu with the same focal point as last year, Raise Money for Lyon. We set up a killer silent auction again this year and it went off to say the least! Thank You to Danny Fuller, Billabong, Anthony Bevilacqua, Michael Bailey, DaKine, Matt Sprouse, and everyone else who donated to our auction. While the auction was doing its thing Duke’s displayed an appetizer and dinner reception to die for as well as provided a beautiful breathe taking sunset to set the mood. Coors Light sponsored the event along with Chateau Ste Michelle Wine Estates which made for plenty of beer and wine to go around and another sponsor that really got the party started was Patron with their Ice Sculpture Tequila Slide. I guess we know how to throw a party, and surprisingly everyone made their next day heat times although some were more wounded then others.

Saturday morning was the start of our weekend surf contest and our Man of the Weekend Lyon Herron surfed the opening wave to start the 1st Heat of the day. For those of you who don’t know why we throw this event every year let me fill you in real fast. Lyon Herron is a local kid who has been fighting a rare kind of cancer called Gardner’s Syndrome since he was 4 years old. This contest was born by our consortium of great friends sticking up for one of our own in hopes to raise Lyon as much money as we can to make it just a little easier on him and his family. It just so happens that our great group of friends collectively has the resources to pull something like this off with style and grace and all in all for the greatest cause I could ever think of.

The Malibu Invitational consisted of 3 divisions like last year which were the Pro’s Invitational, “Malibu Legends” Invitational, and Grom’s Invitational. The Pro’s were competing for a $4,000 purse and the likes of Benji Weatherly, Brad Gerlach, Danny Fuller, Kyle Knox, Quinn McCrystal, Dillon Perillo, Anthony Petruso, Brendan Hearne, Josh Curran, Adam Virs, and many others came out to try and earn an extra coin for their bank account. The Malibu Legends however had a bigger purse to compete for: Bragging Rights! Legends like Allen Sarlo, Donny Wilson, Tom Daniels, Solo Scott, Dale Rhodes, John Baker, Steven Lippman, Carlos Del Olmo, Joey Jenkins, Mike Chipko, and many more had their game faces on for the King Of The Point Title. The groms just wanted to surf, which they did, and still got to go home with some good prizes from Sector 9, Oneill, and Vestal Watches.

LA PAZ, Mexico (AP) — Fishermen pulled in their boats and hotels warned tourists away from beaches Friday as Hurricane Norbert strengthened to a Category 2 storm and bore down on Mexico's southern Baja California Peninsula.

As reported on ap.google.com

LA PAZ, Mexico (AP) — Fishermen pulled in their boats and hotels warned tourists away from beaches Friday as Hurricane Norbert strengthened to a Category 2 storm and bore down on Mexico’s southern Baja California Peninsula.

Norbert, with winds of 100 mph (160 kph), was expected to hit land early Saturday along a relatively unpopulated stretch of coastline north of the resort of Cabo San Lucas. A hurricane warning was issued for the west coast of Baja California, from Puerto San Andresito to Agua Blanca. Forecasters said it would weaken somewhat before hitting land.

Under overcast skies, fishermen pulled their boats onto beaches in La Paz, a port town in the peninsula’s eastern coast. Yellow flags were up on beaches, warning people to stay out of the water.

Eli and Claudia Tubia, on vacation from Texarkana, Texas, took a cruise Wednesday night despite the coming storm, but their hotel in resort-dotted Cabo San Lucas was already storing outdoor furniture and paintings.

“They kind of cleared out the beach, and the restaurants that they have on the beach, they took all the furnishings away,” said Eli Tubia.

Early Friday, Norbert was still 275 miles (445 kilometers) southwest of Baja’s southern tip, but moving north at 10 mph (17 kph.)

Meanwhile, southeast of Norbert, a tropical storm warning was issued from Lagunas de Chacahua to Zihuatanejo as Tropical Storm Odile moved parallel to Mexico’s southern Pacific coastline. Forecasters said it wasn’t expected to hit land directly, but would sweep close to the coast on Saturday and could dump up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) of rain, possibly causing mudslides.

The storm’s maximum sustained winds were near 60 mph (95 kph) with strengthening expected. It was centered about 245 miles (395 kilometers) southeast of Acapulco, and was moving northwest at 9 mph (15 kph.)

Under the hot Indian summer sun the Turkey gang set up the contest site under a big tent, ice cold XS Energy drinks, homemade turkey sandwiches, DJed bumping music, Halloween candy and a big blow up turkey for the grommet gobblers to play on.
The winner of each division were crowned the “TRKY golden gobbler” and presented with an epic homemade “TRKY Triple Crown” plaque. The award for “Best TRKY Toob of the Day” went to young 12 year-old Timmy Gamboa who scored an epic 3-foot stand up pit on a grinding left off the reef. Congratulations to all finalists and to everyone who participated in the “TRKY Oktoberfest Challenge.”

Event #2 is the “TRKY Gobble Gobble Grand Slam” and will be held the weekend of November 8th or 9th in Laguna Beach, Ca. depending on which day the surf forecast is looking best. Professional surfers Rob Machado, Brad Gerlach and Pat O’Connell will get their hands dirty inside of the Coors Banquet Beer shaping bay at the Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo in Del Mar on October 11th & 12th. All the foam flying fun is for a good cause, as the boards these pro surfers create, more than likely one-of-a-kind boards, will be auctioned off for charity.

The proceeds from Machado’s board will go to arts programs at Cardiff-by-the-Sea schools via his very own Rob Machado Foundation. Gerlach, who is firing up the planer, is donating his proceeds to SurfAid International. Endless Summer II star, retired WCTer and Drive Thru series legend Pat O’Connell will offer up his boards proceeds to The Surfrider Foundation. It should be quite a sight to see these powerhouse legends in the water giving it their all in the shaping room. There are rumors circulating that another pro surfer or two may make their way down to the event to participate. Everyone, it seems, loves surfboards.
The public is invited to come down to the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday and watch these surfing heroes have fun cutting through the foam for a good cause. There is also a ton of other activities and events at the Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo. Check the schedule below.

MANLY BEACH, Australia (Friday, October 10, 2008) – Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 3 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour ratings, has officially announced her retirement from full-time competition, effective at the end of the year.

“I feel like now is a really good time, even though I am in my career best form, because I am an all-or-nothing kind of girl and to achieve the goals I set for myself in surfing, I have to give it my all and I’m not,” Beachley said. “I have to be honest with myself – I’m not commiting 100% time and energy and effort and focus into winning world titles. It doesn’t mean that I can’t win world titles, but my priorities are beginning to shift and my focus and my passion in business and charity work and my ambassador roles is beginning to have more appeal to me than competing for a living. I feel like I’ve achieved everything that I’ve wanted to and that it is good to go out while I’m still in top form.”

Beachley’s announcement comes as a surprise to the surfing community, given that the iconic natural-footer is surfing better than ever and currently challenging for the ASP Women’s World Title once again, sitting in No. 3 spot on the ratings at present.

“I feel like I’m surfing the best I have in my whole career,” Beachley said. “Nothing has really changed on tour except for my attitude. It’s my lack of commitment to winning. I base my choices off my experiences and my experience has told me that you have to be 100% focused and also love you’re doing. Even though I love what I do, I’m beginning to love what I’m doing out of the water more. My passion for competitive surfing has been diluted, and to achieve success and to win world titles, you can’t afford for it to be diluted too much. So now I’ve had to make a decision and I’m convinced I’m doing the right thing.’

The Sydney-sider is the most accomplished female surfer in the history of the sport, winning a record seven ASP Women’s World Titles (1998-2004, 2006), scalping 29 elite tour victories, and collecting countless accolades as one of surfing’s most recognizable figures.

“There’s been millions of highlights,” Beachley said. “I think every time that I stopped in my tracks and had to pinch myself and ask ‘is this real?’ have been the highlights of my life. Finding myself in the most random places on Earth, donning a bikini with a board under my arm and just staring out into the ocean in disbelief that I get to do that for a living. One of the greatest achievements was winning my first event back in 1993 and winning my first ASP Women’s World Title back in 1998. Those were both enormous acheivements for me.”

While stepping away from full-time professional surfing, Beachley hasn’t ruled out donning the jersey again should she receive an invite, and will continue to be a force both in and out of the surfing world with her clothing line, her numerous charities and other high-profile projects.

“I have my own brand, Beachley Athletics, which I really want to put a lot more time and energy and effort into,” Beachley said. “I don’t think it’s achieving the success it deserves because I can’t commit enough resources to it. I have my charity, Aim for the Stars. I’ve just begun promoting my book, Beneath the Waves. I will still stage the Beachley Classic. I love women’s surfing. I’m really passionate about it. Just because I’m walking away from the Tour doesn’t mean I’m walking away from women’s surfing. I’ll still be there as a supporter and a believer and also pursuing a career in the media.”

Beachley is competing this week at her signature event, the Beachley Classic, held in Manly, Australia.

“I feel like I’ve created a legacy and that’s something to be incredibly proud of,” Beachley said. “I’ve instilled hunger and passion into the future generations of female competitive surfing coming up through the ranks. I know Steph (Gilmore) looks at me and wants what I got. It was Lisa Andersen before me that gave me the motivation to become seven-times ASP Women’s World Champion. That kind of drive and dedication that it takes to be a champion is the legacy I think I am leaving behind and it’s something I’m very proud of.
