NSSA Nationals bumped from Lower Trestles in favor of Surfing America USA Championships as the California State Parks grants Surfing America the contest permit rather than the NSSA and the National Surf League. Surfing America’s Mike Gerard sums it up, “For the first time in history, member athletes from the ESA, HSA, NSSA, TGSA, and WSA will have a path to compete in the premier USA Championships event at the nation’s premier venue.” We couldn’t agree more…one path to the top is the way to go. And to all you old farts; you make the final of Masters, Senior Masters, etc. and you too can surf Lower Trestles with only three others.
San Juan Capistrano, CA - August 20, 2009 - Surfing America, the National Governing Body for surfing in the United States, received official notice this morning from California State Parks that it has been awarded the permit to hold the 2010 Surfing America USA Championships at Lower Trestles in San Onofre State Beach from June 22-26, 2010.
“This is a very big development for Surfing America and the sport of surfing in the United States,” said the organization’s executive director, Mike Gerard. “There has been a large movement afoot from within Surfing America’s membership, its Board of Directors, and the surf industry to see this happen. Now, for the first time in history, member athletes from ESA, HSA, NSSA, TGSA, and WSA will have a path to compete in the premier USA Championships event at the nation’s premier venue.”
Competing bidders for the Lower Trestles Permit included the National Surf League (NSL) and the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA). Each of the three bidders were evaluated by State Parks based on established criteria addressing the best interest of the State of California, consistent with the California State Parks’ Mission and the park’s General Plan. Factors considered include potential impact on the park resources, public safety, accessibility, activities involved, and pedestrian traffic safety. Surfing America scored highest of the three proposals submitted and, as a result, won the permit bid.
The focus of the 2010 Surfing America USA Championships at Lower Trestles will be on the Surfing America Prime, ISA, and Youth Divisions (Boys Under 18, Boys Under 16, Boys Under 14, Boys Under 12, Girls Under 18, Girls Under 16, and Girls Under 14). As a result, Surfing America is pleased to announce that USA Championships preliminary rounds for all other Divisions will be held at Huntington Beach Pier the week prior (June 16-19, 2010). Finals for all Divisions will be held at Lower Trestles and the 2011 PacSun USA Surf Team will be announced immediately following the event.

Heard they are going to Hawaii but are trying to keep it a secret because they are worried Surfing America will try to take that permit as well? So now that they took lowers ESA, NSSA and HSA are leaving the organization. What does all this mean. What happened to this Surfing America thing being all positive and shit. Sound sound like they really fucked this one up?

I remember a few years back reading Nat Young’s NSSA profile as surfer of the month - something along the lines of “I don’t really like school and want to do home school so I can just surf and not worry about classes until I’m done.” NSSA = Biggest hypocrites in surfing (and that’s saying something). They even schedule their trestles comp for the weeks when every other kid in the country is studying for and taking finals. Hawaii is perfect for ‘em - they don’t care much for education there either.

no offense townboi.

Not at all Mr. Bullshit. Surfing America is letting all the organizations into the USA Championships. That means the best kids from the NSSA, WSA, ESA, TGSA, and HSA will all be competing at the nations best contest venue.

I love how “Stu” and Townboi are BF’s that met on transworldsurf.com! See you bros in two weeks—I’m going on vacation, hold down the fort and play nice. JC

I’ll see what I can do, but pasting stories sent by sponsors and then adding nothing to them is a pretty hard gig, so don’t expect much from us. You must really need a vacation.

FYI Bullshit is correct all the organization are leaving Surfing America except for the WSA. This whole thing is a complete joke.If Surfing America would have not gotten so greedy this thing might have worked out. what do you get when when you have adults who don’t surf making calls for kids who do?

My dad say’s it was about the money. Too bad i think loweres is rad. I will miss it.
August 23rd, 2009 at 10:27 am
maybe this year, but I’m pretty sure Carissa’s dad held her out of the comp a few years back because it conflicted with finals.

welcome to adulthood, Derek.

So why would Surfing America take Lowers from the NSSA and why would the State Parks take it away? I mean the NSSA has been their for a long time right?
August 23rd, 2009 at 11:30 am
They took it because they could and the State Parks gave it to them becuase they were fooled ( at least i hope they did not know what they were doing). To the real Question somtimes things happen that just dont seem right all you can do is just trust in your self that you will do the right things in life. All this is too bad becuase the people who are most effected in all this are the kids who the state park decided were not important.

Anyone at the Surfing America Prime at DMJs this weekend? The kids and their parents sure seem to get it. All the best kids in the west were there for a quality contest experience with a full panel of ASP judges, computer scoring, 20 minute 4 man heat, David Stanfield announcing and a great venue. Ian Cairns was there all weekend scouting the talent. How can it be about greed and money if they lose money on every event? I guess 6 man 15 minute heats and multiple divisions in multiple levels of the same organization and go do different districts too blah blah. Parents and kids are tired of the greed and Prime is a breath of fresh air to them. I guess they are all wrong. Plus the guys that are involved are all great surfers except Mike Gerard, but he’ll kick your but on the mountain.

National Surf League almost got it last year but didn’t because of a paragraph in the contest directive that said it needed to be awarded to the most inclusive organization. This year they took that clause out teeing it up for NSL. If Surfing America didn’t go for it, NSL would have gotten it. Fact.

can we add this one to the who-gives-a-f*ck file?

They’ve always been the same time…

The NSSA Nationals have always run on the last 1 or 2 weeks of school. 2009 was June 17 - June 26 school got out June 24. Finals, Graduations. A scholastic organization that doesnt put kids who actually go to school ahead of all these homeschool slackers. Did a school project of a survey who actually goes to school, more homeschool, then tout their GPA to NSSA - which by the way is WAY harder to get a good GPA if you have all the demands that real school requires.
Hell yeh you can get a high GPA if all u do is surf and go work on the computer HELLO! There is NO reward for kids who actually go to school and compete. National SCHOLASTIC?? surfing assoc??? hhmm

The State realized USA needs an organization to meet the requirements that the rest of the world is using to farm a National team. Surfing America knows this and is trying to get America lined up (like 34 other countries have) with all the requirements to do this. Check out how the other countries i.e. Australia, France etc. run their organizations and farm the kids from the get go to what it takes. America didnt have that.
Now we FINALLY have direction and people dont get it.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:04 am
i dont really understand all this stuff but me and my freinds have already made a pack that we are going to all paddle out during the surfing america event in aprotest.my teacher said we could do this we have about 20 pepople that are going to do it so far. as long as the nssa does not punish us for this mt parents said it was cool.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Suck it, Sorry Real Stu.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:32 am
and then what? My guess is everyone surfing the event laughs as you because you’re not good enough to be in the water during the comp anyway. Sort of like all the dopes who lined up to watch Wacko Jacko ride through LA in a box. Losers, all of ‘em.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Real Stu, a little aggressive on the kids? I mean they are bummed and want to make a point. Why the anger? Let me guess you are a thirty somthing year old who does not surf and are stuck behind a desk? Don’t take it out on the groms bud!Anyways, I thought you were adding this one to the who-gives-a-f*ck file? I guess you do?
August 25th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
why are they bummed? Sounds like the comp will be more inclusive than ever before. Protests over a surf comp are as lame as pretending you know anything about other posters on a website bb.
August 25th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Surfing America is for the kids - finally a National Governing body with the same direction and requirements that the rest of the world is using. So your kid gets on the competition track from the beginning with the right judging, format and everything they will need to learn and know if they want to compete nationally and beyond. why is that so hard to understand? because we havent had it….parents didnt realize 34 other countries are on track and we’ve been having all kinds of contests and directions/rules, thinking we’re all good but we weren’t lined up. Now we can start. The World has been laughing at us all screwed up, can’t even get our country supporting a National Surf Team. Lets do it!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
well you need to understand it, so do your parents and you actually go to school? then your teachers need to understand it too. Do they know there are more “homeschool” kids in NSSA than kids actually in school? yeh what now?

The NSL had their red bull event at Uppers a few months back and opened the line-up to the public for like 45 mins in between their Games a few times during the day. I wonder if they offered to do the same for Lowers?
