The surf is pumping away on the North Shore of O’ahu. Talk of “the biggest swell in years! and a possible running of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, is rampant on the overgrown bikepath. I spoke with Mark Healey today about a possible Eddie event and he was fired up about the potential, but said it was too early to tell. Mark and the rest of “The Eddie invitees have a waiting period that runs until February 28th. The monster swell predicted for next Wednesday could really rock the North Shore-some Web sites are predicting 25 foot seas. Batten down the hatches, and somebody better tie that Pipe contest scaffolding to a coconut tree.

Rip Curl Pro Pipe Masters.
While there is currently plenty of swell in the water, the direction isn’t ideal for Pipe, and there is a lot of backwash-causing sand on the beach. The swell direction is looking better for Monday, and the current swell should sweep some sand off the beach. Stay tuned.

A Ride To The Westside
With strong North winds and ten-foot storm seas, the North Shore was a mess the other day, so Jeff Baldwin, his wife, two daughters, and myself, took a cruise to the leeward side of O’ahu for some sun, surf, and poke (raw ahi, haole). We checked a semi-secret spot and watched Makua, Sunny, Marcus Hickman, and Brian Pacheco get barreled ten feet in front of dry reef. Pacheco really rips the spot and was getting wave after wave, shack after shack.

We ended up at Makaha and surfed with Kahea Hart, Dede Suryana, a bunch of tankers, and some ripping locals. When you surf at Makaha it’s hard not to stare in awe at the beauty of the area-the place is awesome, just watch for the backwash.

Stay tuned right here for up to the minute reports-these next few days could be crazy!
