Stating that he is the best rookie on tour is the obvious. Although Kekoa and Michel could also be very strong contenders for rookie of the year, Nathaniel has one advantage. He’s from the west coast aka the best coast.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
He's got a really great argument after winning the US Open!
September 16th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
be cause he busts fat sprays like this one
September 16th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
I think Nathaniel should be the ASP World Tour’s Rookie of the Year because he has natural talent and the drive to win. So many people write him off and say he can only surf shitty small waves. He did good at J-Bay and I think he's gonna step it up the rest of the year and prove all the haters wrong by surfing and placing good in the rest of the contests, shitty or good surf!
Peace!
Daniel

Serious answer which i hope is considered.
Nathaniel? World tour rookie of the year? orly?
I would begin by looking at quality and consistency for all the events so far
Based on the results , Kekoa and Michel are at the top of the list.
Ultimately I choose Kekoa as rookie of the year for his cruise, privileged attitude combined with his consistently raw and powerful surfing.
SHOOTS!
Moreover, how can you argue "rookie of the year" less than half way through the year?
September 16th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
townboi's posting above…
if based on consistency alone… those three 33rds in a row look pretty nice… then again Ricky Basnett would ultimately win dat one…
September 16th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
He should be rookie of the year because he has the best mustache out of anyone on tour!! Now tell him I said that so he hooks it up with the prize pack…MOvember here we come!!
September 16th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Great 08 keep it rolling…. "Rookie of the Year"…. it started with "Believe in yourself" and is working it's way through "focus & persevere"… mid-season it looks good, finish strong and it's all you!
September 16th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
I think the better question should be why not?
September 16th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
He should win "Rookie of the Year" because he has smelly toes
September 16th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
He should win because he is giving away all this free stuff!
http://www.CaliSurfer.com did something similar last year. Im stoked! Thanks Transworld.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
Curran should win rookie of the year because he is the only new surfer on tour who has the combination of new school maneuvers and classic carving turns. Placing 9th at J-bay is solid enough for anyone to win an award as far as I'm concerned.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
Nathaniel Curran has stuck to it, not showing frustration in the face of a frustrating season, and surfed his heart out as a rookie for his first ASP season. It's not easy to find statistics in surfing, but I have read somewhere that this is not the first time Nathaniel has faced adversity in his surfing career. Look what happened after all his injuries and sponsorship problems in the past. The guy went balls out and came in first on the WQS. What's saying Nate-Dog cannot do it again with the last few events on the tour? With his solid j-bay showing and a newfound swagger in his step, Nathaniel will show Bam and the Spartan what an "OX"nard boy can do when his back is against the wall.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Him and his gear are super dope, he can surf any type of wave you throw at him. He shreds so hard just like i will in this new gear
September 17th, 2009 at 12:05 am
why? His last name is Curran, easily mistaken for Curren.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:35 am
The whole point of surfing is to get barreled and Nathaniel's barrel riding is sweet.
September 17th, 2009 at 2:36 am
Nathaniel Curran should be the Rookie of the year because he is bomb. From his cutbacks, to airs, to barrel riding he is an overall amazing surfer. He is a versatile surfer, which was shown at J-bay, which gave him a good result taking down many including Adriano de Souza. Overall he is the best rookie on the tour. From the contests, with the win at J-bay, to just free surfing Curran has momentum moving as the tour moves closer to the end.
September 17th, 2009 at 4:30 am
well crafted response full of fluff and bullshit…
nice work devin
September 17th, 2009 at 4:31 am
best response so far…
September 17th, 2009 at 8:42 am
Way to bribe people into sucking Nathaniel's penis. Just saying…
September 17th, 2009 at 11:24 am
yes.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
This is classic, if they mistake nathaniel for Tom, he will definitely win rookie of the year.
Good One!
September 17th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
This guy is a stud… he should be rookie of the year simply because this is the moment for him to enter the spotlight on the elite tour - and he deserves to shine! He put everything he had into his passion for surfing (possessions and some body parts included)and this is the utimate reward for his perseverance thus far.
September 17th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
PS - and because i’m following his shit all the way from Barbados !!!
September 17th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
Cuz it's time he stepped out of Tim's shadow and put himself on the map.
September 17th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
I always thought that was a strange coincidence that Pat & Tom are such big names in surfing and then there's Timmy and Nathaniel with almost the same last name. Maybe if I change my last name to Currin me and my brother will rip harder.
September 17th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
i think he should be the rookie of the year because he surfs really good and he did good in j-bay. His surfing is natural when you watch him surf.
September 18th, 2009 at 12:28 am
I think that Nathaniel Curran should be Rookie of the Year because he has stood out of the crowd this year amongst all the other surfers. Nathaniel is going to be the next top surfer within the next four years. You can quote me on that!
September 18th, 2009 at 12:31 am
there is no dought about why he shouldn't be the rookie, he is a ripper shredder. nathaniel style is awesome, throws buckets, and tears the lip of the waves apart. i feel bad for the waves. there shouldn't even be questions if he should or should not be the rookie because he just plain out rips. thats all there is to it.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:38 am
I think that Nathaniel Curran should win rookie of the year because he has sick lines which he demonstrated in the 3 days of Nathaniel Curran video on surfline! He is good at it all! With that much talent I am sure he will continue to surf well for the rest of the year!
September 18th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Because he loves FREE STYLE SPEED WALKING!!! And because he took the cake at the U.S. Open.
September 19th, 2009 at 1:57 am
I've always been a fan of an underdog story. Underdogs are what legends are made of and I'm a fan of Nathaniel Curran, so it works for me. There is something American about pulling for the underdog.
September 19th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Nathaniel should be the rookie of the year because he is pretty damn consistent and can take 90% of the tour in head high surf.
September 19th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
I think Nathaniel Currran should win the rookie of he year because hes the best rookie and he can surf small stuff wicked good, he can surf big stuff too. Also I think he will be a contender for the title in the next couple of years. He rips
September 19th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Because hes the man, and i cant afford a board so that would be tight
September 20th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
His style is that of flow and his competition is waves behind him. He's gonna get the rookie title because of his presence at a heat and his gnarliness off the board.
Hes my pick for sure
September 20th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
Easy, classic power moves with TONS of progressive surfing, total shreder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 21st, 2009 at 6:14 am
No coulda's or shoulda's: Nate Dawg WILL BE the ASP Rookie of the Year because after the 4 events left this season he WILL BE the highest ranked rookie on tour.
September 21st, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Because he looks like my mate Bradass, surfs like him to.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:08 pm
he should be rookie of the year cause he surfs well in all conditions and he's the complete package. power surfing, big airs, fluid and smoothe style and he is posting results that should raise eyebrows. he's not just timmy currans little brother. he is a bona fide threat on the elite tour, where as if you draw him in your heat, you bring your A GAME
September 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 am
Well there are a lot of good rookies coming into the surf world but what Nate Curran showed everyone at J-Bay is that he definitely rises over all rookies and deserves it from what he showed us.
September 23rd, 2009 at 2:05 am
Because he's got the best traction pad I have ever seen!!!!
September 23rd, 2009 at 4:33 pm
I think Nathaniel should be the ASP World Tour’s Rookie of the Year because he is my broad-dog!
September 24th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
I think Nathaniel Curran should be rookie of the year just by the fact that he is 25 and stepping it up in the surf industry in his first year on tour, don't get me wrong Drew Courtney which is a rookie also and older than Nat placed ninth in the second event of the year , and also 17th in the first , the difference is that Nathaniel is hungry and hunger is all you need…he just got's to keeping feeding that hunger… Go Nathaniel
September 27th, 2009 at 4:45 am
Flat out he rips. He's very polished, smooth flowing style along with power and new school flair. This is very evident in the way he surfed the QS last year. Hopefully he'll get a few good placings to finish the year and requalify so we can all see his true abilities.
September 29th, 2009 at 6:10 pm
because nathaniel currans my bro
September 30th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Nate should win cause he is a master surfer. Badass Wookie rookie
September 30th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Curran should be "Rookie of the year" because swell is immense at J-bay and it's hard to pull off what Nathaniel did so fair play to him. He's produced a great year so he deserves it and good luck for next season.
October 3rd, 2009 at 3:41 am
Nathaniel Curran should be rookie of the year because he is such a solid surfer and he has stuck with it. The beginning of the season has been hard for him and showed some bumpy spots. He struggled early on in his career but has recently started to find his niche. He's worked hard on the WCT as well as the WQS, spent time working some video spots and totally rips it up! Most of all, he continues to work hard in spite of his difficult rookie year. Nathaniel Curran is the bomb!
October 8th, 2009 at 8:03 am
I think Nathaniel Curran should win rookie of the year because of his awesome style. He consistently rips out there and there is no question how talented this guy is! On top of that, I bought the FAMOUS ARGYLE TAIL PAD which is designed for Nathaniel Curran!
October 11th, 2009 at 4:15 am
He should win rookie of the year cuz he's put in the effort. He has been training with a personal trainer harder than he ever has before, obviously with he win hes showing hes serious. He deserves rookie of the year because hes going to be a solid contender, its like in any other sport, the rookie of the year is always the guy who makes an impact in the sport, thats what he is doing. He surfs little mush making it look like the best day of the year and when he gets good waves you cant help but get excited, because you know hes only going to get better. Its crazy to think that a guy with the skill he has will get better as his career goes on. Overall I think he should get rookie of the year because he brings so much to surfing right now and the future is only looking better. Nathaniel Curran will be one of the best surfers in on tour for a long time to come. He is a wake up call to everyone on tour and shows where the future is going to be. He should and probably will be rookie of the year because of the determination and skill that he brings to the sport right now, but also because of what he will bring in the future.
October 16th, 2009 at 6:33 am
Nathaniel Curran is one of the athletes who stand out for his determination, strategy, focus and approach, he is a true warrior and competitor, relaxed and realistic. His positive attitude to challenges and his confidence in all types of waves, especially the big ones make him deserv the ASP World Tour's Rookie of the Year. He still has a lot to learn and improve in the future. It goes without saying that many rookies would have wanted to have a year as good as Nathaniel had last year and so far this year. What is certain is that if he wins the Rookie of the Year we will continue to see a more motivated Nathaniel Curran, giving a 100%, the extra mile, in this sport that has become our lifestyle.

Nathaniel Curran has just 'Gobsmacked' everyone with his unique skill and style. Nath really shows potential to take out the World Title in the near future, and should be a feared threat from his opponents. Keep up the excellent work Nath, looking forward to see what you got!
Cheers - Peace out.
*Please let me win!
October 31st, 2009 at 8:16 am
He should defintily get rookie of the year because for a rookie you would be very nervous and under pressure in your first year on tour, making the tour is hard enough but getting good results like his 9th at J-bay is incredible, he should definitly get the award
November 7th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
just watch Nathaniel Curran's Section from The Pursuit and youll see why hes should be the rookie of the year
