According to a Luke Egan’s statements on “Down The Line” surf talk radio; current ASP World Tour #2 surfer Joel Parkinson re-injured his ankle during his first heat at the recent Billabong Pro Mundaka. “I’m not sure if you guys realized, but on his first wave in the Mundaka contest he re-injured his ankle and that had a lot to do with how he surfed the rest of his heat,” Egan told Scott Bass and TransWorld SURF’s Jeff Baldwin this past Sunday. Luke Egan, who was on the World Tour for many years, has been acting as a coach/mentor to his friend and Billabong stable mate Joel Parkinson all year so we know this report is the real deal.

“He’s been getting it worked on pretty intensely and has had a few surfs since we’ve been here [Portugal] and feels like he has some strength in areas that he didn’t have before. At the moment, we just gotta hope he can pull through without re-injuring it again and get a good result,” he added.

Parko first injured his ankle while free surfing in Bali this past summer and it appears to have put a serious damper on his maiden ASP World Title hopes, raking up a series of 17th place finishes.

Nobody wants to see the 2009 ASP World Title be decided by an unfortunate injury and we wish Parko the best recovery possible—get well soon mate!
