According to an article on www.ibaworldtour.com Jamie O’Brien, the same one flipping the bird to the deeply-slotted booger in the picture above, is going to trade in his tri fin for a boogieboard at the upcoming Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro. And why not? Apparently surfing Pipe with just a couple other guys is too good of an opportunity to let pass. ..Smoke ‘em Jamie!

In one of the most extraordinary twists in modern Pro surfing, Pipeline local Jamie O’Brien has been granted a start in the seeded rounds of the Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro.
International General Manager of the IBA Terry McKenna says that O’Brien started his surfing career on a bodyboard as a kid before making the transition to fibreglass.
“Apparently Jamie was into it when he was younger and still feels keen enough about it to have a start in the event. Word on the street is that he can still hold his rail in and ride deep in the barrel at Pipe, so it will be amazing to watch ” said McKenna.
“Jamie is one of the most innovative surfers in the world and an astounding waterman so I would not put it past him to blow some minds at his home break.”
“I can only imagine that this will be one of the most highly anticipated heats of the year and watched by everyone in the surfing community. It’s a bold move and a first for the IBA ” said McKenna.

This was be so cool to watch, he is so comfortable out at Pipe, I think he will just be out there having fun. I doubt he will win against the more experienced speed bumps but I’m sure he will win a few heats because of his knowledge of the break. Besides, who could resist getting deep at pipe with no one out?

i heard the bodyboard contest director approached jamie. looks like bodyboarding can use some “hype”… i wouldn’t give a frick about this contest, but now since jamie is in it i’ll watch his heat for sure just for shits! there is no way jamie can be taking this comp seriously. they probably asked him if he’d do it and he said “sure, why not” catch a couple waves out at pipe with a couple boogie boarders in the line up?! any of those pipe guys woulda jumped at the opportunity guaranteed!

So much trash talk… Get over yourselves. Surfers can rip, AND bodyboarders can rip. Bodyboarding is constantly pushing the limits on what waves can be ridden and the tricks they can do on them. And so is surfing, they are both progressing.
Most decent surfers show nothing but respect to fellow good bodyboarders, but all you guys can do is say “speed-bump kooks” and “dick draggers”. Funny thing is is that I agree with the earlier comment about most of the shit talking coming from CALIFORNIANS.

i been to hawaii, i got a 8 foot barrel at pipe, got waimea shorebreak maxing and loved every minute of it. i ride a bodyboard and the funny thing is I am friends with about 5/6 surfers on WQS and WCT and they respect bodyboarders, not you dingbat kooks on here.
by the way that guy in the photo is sacha specker from South Africa and this day he got one of the best waves at pipe, respect!!!
