We invited four teams from four companies to conceptualize and execute a photographic feature to be shown on the pages of TransWorld SURF. Teams were also responsible for a five-minute video for transworldsurf.com. The teams had two months to go anywhere in the world and shoot anything they wanted. The only rules: no Photoshop and their chosen theme must be reflected throughout the whole submission.

The simplest of ideas sometimes prove most difficult, as the Reef team learned firsthand. “Those guys were super lucky to get a few hours at perfect, three-to-four-foot Teahupo’o” says Ben Bourgeois, who thanks to Delta airlines got stuck for 30 hours in the Atlanta airport en route to Tahiti, thus missing the day in which these images took place. “Once I arrived the surf was huge, blown out, and junky the rest of the trip. If it weren’t for that first day, the concept would have been blown and these photos wouldn’t have happened.”

After choosing our location, locking down athletes, and outfitting them with new boards of the single-fin variety, we set off to make love to the ocean. We teamed up with the band Le Blorr for our musical inspiration and decided to embark on a serene little collaboration of their music video Seven Sister and our dudes getting super steezy on their single fins down in Costa Rica. The boys didn’t just get groovy and cruisey on the one, though, they went absolutely nuclear on them. Our team pushed the boundaries of alternative board riding and took one fin where it has never before seemed possible. Fully rotated airs, inverts, blowing the back out of the lip, getting deeper in the tube, and just slashing harder than GnR on these things. You’re going to fall in love…our movement is unique as what’s old is now new again. However, our old is newer. The Single Life is about to take over your body and your soul.

For our shoot, we skipped the meetings with marketing guys, photographers, and company bigwigs, and went directly to our surfers and asked them for ideas. In walked Cheyne Magnusson with his first-ever PowerPoint explained his idea for “8 Bit.” The Body Glove team and our other surfers were hooked like an eight-year-old playing Mario Bros. all night in 1985.
