On August 25, 2009, Bethany Edmund was swimming about 100 yards off shore at the popular Carlsbad surf spot Terramar when she was attacked by what appears to be a juvenile Great White Shark. The beach is located in North San Diego County, just a few miles North of Solana Beach, where a 66- year old man, Dave Martin, was the victim of a fatal shark attack in April of 2008.
According to a report on the Shark Research Committee website, Bethany was taking pictures underwater with a new camera when she noticed a slight pain in one of her feet. She shrugged the pain off thinking that she had mistakenly kicked the reef. But less than a minute later she felt the same pain and so began to leave the area thinking that she was in an area with a lot of reef. But then when she was swimming away she was struck on the upper right thigh and actually propelled out of the water by the force. She realized what was happening and so began to bodysurf towards the shore only to feel something trying to hold her underwater by the calf. She hoped that it might be one of the other swimmers, but when she surfaced they were about 10 feet away from Bethany. When she started to bodysurf another wave she was struck on the left calf again and held underwater for about 4 or 5 seconds. Luckily, Bethany accidently kicked the shark while underwater, which caused the shark to release her. The attack left Bethany with bruising and several small puncture areas on her calf and foot.
The shark is estimated to be a 5 to 6 foot juvenile Great White shark. To see photos of Bethany’s shark scars and to read a first hand account, click here.

Justin’s at Deserts, Stu. However, if he were here i think he might say something like, “I could put a cap in a six foot whitey with my Riffe Orca Slayer 3000.”
It’s weird though that the local news hasn’t blown this up yet. Cover up?

Don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve heard about a baby white around here for the last few months. Some guys at Swamis reported a shark in the water a few months back which was confirmed by the lifegaurds on duty at the time…baby white 5-6 feet. Read a couple of similar reports from Orange County on the shark committee site too. Anyone else heard about/seen this thing?

Agreed, but you’re missing the joke. Apparently your brother and I have inside jokes you’re not up to speed on. Next thing you know I’ll be at your Christmas dinner table.

I love how they kept this off the local news just to keep the tourist dollars coming in for the last few months of summer. No big deal, it’s just a little nip right? I heard sharks love the Esondido meat more, is this true?

She is a super chill nice girl not to mention gorgeous, i see her at terramar in her tiny bikini all the time.. Super shy and turns red if you talk to her its pretty funny we all tease her about it. One of those girls who doesnt know she is rad which makes her 20x hotter!

The shark figured out she was local, so it was gentle with her. Had she been from Temecula or somewhere out there, the shark would have tore her up! Let this be a warning to all you inlanders!
