As reported by Fred Swegles for the OC Register.

San Clemente High can add the 2009 Interscholastic Surfing Federation state title to the National Scholastic Surfing Association state title that the school won in March.

Today at Oceanside, San Clemente’s bodyboard team and boys shortboard team both won their divisions, while the boys longboard team and girls shortboard teams were runners-up in their divisions. Overall, San Clemente was declared state champ.

Newport Harbor High’s girls shortboard team took the state title in that division. Out of four division titles awarded today, San Clemente took two, Newport Harbor one and Torrey Pines High one.

BOYS SHORTBOARDING

San Clemente edged Carlsbad High, 32-31, in three six-man heats in the championship match. Riley Metcalf won his heat to lead San Clemente. Doug van Mierlo and Sam Branker delivered second-place finishes for San Clemente. Shaw Kobayashi and Jeremy Carter contributed third-place points.

GIRLS SHORTBOARDING

Newport Harbor High, led by Kaleigh Gilchrist, decisioned San Clemente 12-9 in a six-girl championship heat. San Clemente’s Emmy Merrill was runner-up, Newport Harbor’s Devyn Hartnett third and San Clemente’s Chelsea Byland fourth.

WHAT’S NEXT?

ISF doesn’t yet have a national tournament. Surf teams will converge June 17-20 at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point to battle it out for the NSSA’s national team title.
