Pat O’Connell’s Drive-Thru West Oz Update

Five days into it, and Pat O’Connell still doesn’t have any great surf stories to tell from his Drive-Thru West Oz trip. But he’s with good friends (Occy, Shane Dorian, Benji Weatherley, Donavon Frankenreiter, and Andy Irons) and good wine. Which means, of course, that perfect waves are just around the corner. Here’s Pat’s latest dispatch from the best film series in surfing:

“Starting to see the first sign of the sun in four days and it can’t come fast enough. I’m the most upbeat person in the world, but I’ve duck-dove 15 times more than bottom turned and that ratio needs to swing around quickly…” says Pat O.

“Yesterday, Occy, Donavon and I surfed small Rabbit Hill and then our crew headed off to the famed West Oz wineries for lunch. Occy is a national hero so wherever we go, we’re first class. When we turned up for lunch, the place was closed but then they saw Occy and in two seconds, bottles of wine were flowing and Occy was in the kitchen cooking up pizzas,” he adds.

“The forecast is looking better for the weekend so let’s pray for surf!”—Pat O

A frother of the highest order, Occy is the oldest guy on the Drive Thru and surfs more than anyone…except Pat O’Connell.

Whether it be Huntington or Hossegor, Rabbit Hill (pictured) or Rockies, Occy is the most beloved surfer on Earth.

man, this drive through thing would be so good if they’d just get rid of Benji. Seriously painful to watch as he whinges his way across the globe. I wonder what he has on Browning that keeps him in these vids…

How could you hate on Benji. He’s a rad dude. The only difference between Benji whinging and you is he’s actually having fun and traveling and surfing. Your blogging all day and whinging. I guess I’d whinge too if I where you guys and all did instead of actually surf was blog.

I agree with the Stuwster. Benji as well as Donovon need to hit the road. I actually like both Benji and Dono, but there time has come. Fresh Blood for the Drive Thru could carry this tired series for a little while longer, but not much. Why don’t they get all the former tour vets into an event/series like the old Billabong events where they searched for sick waves?

Despite complaints to the contrary, Mr. Cote will have to agree that Stu has his finger on the pulse of surfing. Bolt Thrower - it’s funny you mention Donovan because I actually started to go off on him as well but then decided his billabong-groomed image was so funny he should be included still just for his efforts. Doesn’t matter that we’re all laughing at him instead of with him - a laugh is still a laugh.

Ya I saw benji do work for five hours on monday. The guys IS the drive through movie and has been there since the begining . Lets break it down for you :Benji would still wax you in a heat. 2. He gets paid to surf and travel and your jealous. He has all his hair and he is skinny again 4.His chick is hotter than any girl you will ever be with. Dont Hate just bow down
