Lots of folks think Orcutt’s a hick town, hardly a hatchery for great surfers. Obviously, those folks have never heard of Killian Garland.

Not only is Killian a great kid, he’s a wicked freesurfer and a fierce competitor, which in the past decade has earned him five NSSA titles (Mini Groms, Open Boys, Explorer Boys, Open Juniors, and Airshow), plus greatness in Volcom’s VQS. Now that he’s eighteen, the next logical step has been the ASP’s WQS circuit, which Garland calls “pretty damn hard”-his best result so far is a ninth in September’s Op Newport Classic.

While Killian was growing up and ripping the beachbreaks of Pismo and Guadalupe, his dad lived in Santa Barbara, so during big swells Killian would catch rides south to surf some sweet right-hand point breaks, a welcome respite from the Central Coast’s ubiquitous and fickle sandbars.

“There’s a lot of places to surf around here,” says Killian, “And I’m right in the middle of everything, from Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz. It’s sick.”

Now with his own wheels, Killian has the Central Coast at his disposal-prime training grounds for a professional surfer, because, hey, if you can shred there, you can shred anywhere, just like Killian (if you’re lucky).- Michael Kew
