Grant Baker Wins The Mavericks Invitational
South Africa’s Grant “Twiggy” Baker wins at mega Mavericks
Two events, two wins. And while it’s too early to call Twiggy the Kelly Slater of big wave contests, he headed down that path after his second win on the 2014 Big Wave World Tour. The South African regularfoot bested a field of the worlds top big wave riders on Friday in surf that reached the 20’+ mark and was abnormally hollow due to a west angled swell. And while a south wind made it difficult for competitors in the final, Twiggy rose above and sealed the win, “Obviously a magical day for me personally at Mavericks, the conditions were challenging, but this is a highlight of my career,” he told the ASP.
And while Twiggy’s surfing was extremely impressive, the most talked about event was Mark Healey getting caught inside by one of the biggest sets of the day and having all of the terror caught on a GoPro. See the video below and note the look of sheer terror on Healey’s face as he approaches the already-breaking wave. He’s joined in the pit by Jamie Sterling’s ten-foot board, which is made to look like a toothpick by the sheer girth of the wave.
The next top on the Xpreshon Big Wave World Tour is either Todos Santos, Mexico or Nelscott Reef in Oregon. Whichever big wave spot has the best conditions will get the nod. For more information go to http://bigwaveworldtour.com/.
