Live From The Moon With Greg Browning

Live From The Moon With Greg Browning

Greg Browning is one of surfing’s most esteemed directors and has the Drive Thru series as well as numerous Taylor Steele collaborations under his belt. For the past year, Browning has been working on a film called ‘Live From The Moon’ which has been wrapped and is now premiering across the country. We caught up with Greg to get the scoop on one of the years most anticipated flicks…—JC

TransWorld SURF: First off, how did you come up with the name Live From The Moon?
Greg Browning: The name came from a surf trip we went on with Body Glove vice president Scott Daley. We were on a boat and it was at the end of a long day of surfing and there was this metal bar on the boat that you had to duck your head under when walking past. So Scott hit his forehead on the bar, fell down, and when he came up was like, ‘I’m on the moon!’ We just thought, ‘This is a moon move we’re going to do.’ You also have the JFK speech where he talked about why the USA went to the moon. It wasn’t because it was easy; it was because it was hard. It’s a quote that our surfers are all about. Our guys love reading swell charts and chasing after them, and a lot of the places we went to are so far out there, they might as well be on the moon.

So, besides Scott Daley, nobody actually went to the moon?
Correct. Besides Daley, none of us went to the moon.

What was the most challenging part of the making of the movie?
With any movie the biggest challenge is finding a way to pay for it. That’s where it all begins, how can you create a budget that allows for people to go out there, chase swells around the world, and film it all? We were really fortunate in that all of the trips we went, we scored basically the swell of the year. We were really lucky, but our guys read swell maps really well. That’s all they do—they wake up in the morning and their newspaper is a swell chart. The movie is a big undertaking for the brand, and it’s really cool because it’s Body Glove’s 60th year of business and when we decided to do the movie, everyone was like ‘Don’t know if we should do it, we have a book we’re working on, we have a dedication to Bill and Bob (Bill and Bob Meistrell founded Body Glove), and we lost Bob this year.’ But Bob was really into it and the movie ended up being dedicated to him and his “Do what you love, love what you do” mantra.

What locations can we expect to see in the film?
Hawaii, Ireland, Tahiti, mainland Mexico, and Japan.
There are a lot of GoPro clips in the trailer. What was your experience like using them?
I’ve been using GoPro cameras since the Drive Thru days—like right when they came out. One of my good friends went to school with the owner of GoPro so we had an early connection with them. And between Jamie O’Brien, Alex Gray, and Anthony Walsh, we kind of had to use ‘em, as they are some of the main guys using GoPro’s. What they’re doing with the positioning of and the quality of the GoPro is amazing. There’s a shot in the film of Alex Gray in mainland Mexico that I think is what every surfer wants to see—he’s just sitting in a barrel for like ten seconds. And that’s what GoPro does—they offer an opportunity for surfers—and non surfers—to take you right there, like, ‘Whoo! I’m in the barrel!’
