Billabong Pro Tahiti: Perfect 10s At Teahupo‘o Presented By Air Tahiti Nui

Under a blazing Tahitian sun, slack winds, and a firing 4-6 southwest swell, the Billabong Pro Tahiti simply went off today. “This is the best Teahupo’o I’ve surfed in a couple of years,” said one Kelly Slater. And it was. Not that big, but just flawless. Not a drop of water out of place. It was so perfect that it looked like any of us could have surfed out there and got the wave of our life—until Slater was getting chucked headfirst over the falls on a late drop gone awry. In other words, Teahupo‘o still has teeth at four foot. Ask legendary snowboarder (and keen surfer) Brian Iguchi who got caught inside on a post-contest clean up set. After retrieving the remnants of his board, I told him how I was scared shitless while snowboarding Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “Yeah, I guess it’s all relative, huh?” he laughed. Pretty sure we picked the right sport, I’ll take trunks and reef rash over lift tickets and avalanches any day of the week. Oh, and Tahiti ain’t so bad either.

Top 5 Waves Of The Day

John John Florence
Despite advice from his caddy, John John whipped it around on a draining west bowl wave and tube ride his way to a 10. Guess that’s why I’m in the channel getting sunburnt while homie is getting kegged.

Jeremy Flores
One of the most fearless surfers on the World Tour, Jeremy is right at home in throating Teahupo‘o barrels.

Mick Fanning
Fanning drops a 10 in the dying seconds to scrape by lethal wildcard Ian Walsh. How do you spell clutch? FANNO.

Josh Kerr
Speaking of clutch, Josh Kerr got past Kieren Perrow with less than 5 seconds left. A screaming tube earned him a 9.33 and a trip to the next round.

Nathan Hedge
That’s how you f—king claim a wave—after a 9 that puts Jordy Smith on the ropes. The Hog didn’t make it past Jordy but he showed the world a proper claim. Take note Brazil.
