Volcom Fiji Pro: Day 3 Highlights And Recap
After a few days off, the 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro roared back into action at Cloudbreak. Six-to-eight-foot barrels were on tap, and the world’s best showed why they earn the big bucks. And while there were tubes and big turns galore, even the best pay the price at big Cloudbreak. “That’s the worst beating I’ve ever had,” said South Africa’s Travis Logie after getting rag-dolled across the razor sharp coral reef. Logie was cut up from head to toe in his round three matchup against CJ Hobgood and will be headed home tonight in what no doubt will be an uncomfortable 11-hour Fiji Airways flight…get well soon bru!
Volcom Fiji Pro Day 3 Heat By Heat Recap
Round 3 Heat 4 Jeremy Flores vs. Miguel Pupo
Early this morning Jeremy was worried that the waves weren’t going to be big enough for a backside surfer to fit into the barrels, but a nice pulse came through after a slow start and the Frenchman was able to use his tube riding prowess to KO the smooth surfing Brazilian.
Round 3 heat 5 Sebastian Zietz vs. Kai Otton
Seabass channels his inner AI and takes out Kai Otton with a last minute buzzer beater, marking the second time he’s done that in this event.
Round 3 Heat 6 Mitch Coleborn vs. Kelly Slater
The Volcom Fiji Pro wildcard puts up a good fight against the 11-Time World Champ and current event champion Kelly Slater but comes up short. “I was bobbing and weaving as best as I could,” says Slater of his near perfect ride. He would later go on to congratulate his brother Steve on the birth of his son Van.
Round 3 Heat 7 Mick Fanning vs. Heitor Alves
As the tide fills in, the sets slow down a bit and Mick Fanning gets by the last remaining Brazilian surfer in the event. The Brazilian storm officially passes.
Round 3 Heat 8 Travis Logie vs. CJ Hobgood
CJ Hobgood broke the fin plugs out of his favorite board yesterday and is now on his backup stick but it doesn’t seem to slow him down. Logie smacks his head on the reef; gets rag dolled across the reef, and is shredded from head to toe. He’ll be lucky to be healed up by the time the next event in Bali kicks off. Either way he’s off to LA tonight and what’s sure to be a miserable flight. Get well soon bru!
Round 3 Heat 9 Josh Kerr vs. Brett Simpson
In a battle of Orange County versus San Diego the Aussie transplant brings the win home or team SD. “my heart is about to pop out of my chest” say Josh’s wife Nicole as she watches the seconds tick away at the Tavarua bar.
Round 3 Heat 10 Julian Wilson vs. Kolohe Andino
There’s a friendly rivalry that goes on between Namotu and Tavarua and it comes to a head when Julian and Kolohe aka “Brother” do battle at Cloudbreak. In a low scoring affair Brother continues to be the giant killer…not one to take a loss lightly, we wisely didn’t hit up Jules for a post heat quote.
Round 3 Heat 11 Matt Wilkinson vs. Nat Young
Not too many barrels going down so it’s turning into a turn contest and it’s clearly evident that Nat has been doing some squats…his turns are crazy powerful and he takes out Wilko on a 6’0” CI round pin.
Round 3 Heat 12 Joel Parkinson vs. Yadin Nicol
After swearing off fishing on contest days, Parko lights up Cloudbreak for the highest heat score of the day so far. Dude is looking lethal at Cloudbreak and is an instant candidate for the New Era X Volcom Fiji Pro MVP of the day. Vote tomorrow morning (West Coast USA time) and you could win a trip to Fiji!
Round 4 Heat 1 John John Florence vs. Jordy Smith vs. Taj Burrow
With yours truly acting as his board caddy, John John drops the first perfect ten point ride of the day with an incredible barrel on the Shishkebabs section. “That was a super fast barrel in there,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it without my incredible board caddy!” Okay, I fabricated that last bit. Was John John your MVP of the day? If so vote for him on our Facebook pageTuesday morning West Coast USA time.
Round 4 Heat 2 Kelly Slater vs. Sebastian Zietz vs. Jeremy Flores
The swell starts filling in just in time for three of the hardest charging guys on tour and they don’t disappoint. Kelly drops the second ten of the day, then cops two eight footers on the head. Warrior! To nobody’s surprise Slater moves into the quarterfinals and has the rest of the day off. Was Slater your MVP? If so vote for him tomorrow morning on our Facebook page!
Round 4 Heat 3 CJ Hobgood vs. Mick Fanning vs. Josh Kerr
CJ Hobgood gets past Kerr and Fanning in what CJ calls “a scrappy heat.” The former World Champ Moves into the quarterfinals and by the end of the day would be the last remaining goofyfoot.
Round 4 Heat 4 Joel Parkinson vs. Kolohe Andino vs. Nat Young
Kolohe has the best heat of his current Volcom Fiji Pro run, but has the misfortune of surfing against Parko—the man is dropping nines like it’s going out of style and does a huge AI style cutback where he’s fully extended. That’s style kids…
Round 5 Heat 1 Jordy Smith vs. Jeremy Flores
Jordy and Jeremy go toe to toe in throttling Cloudbreak barrels. The two regularfoots put on a “How To Surf Cloudbreak Backside” clinic with Jordy squeaking out a win and a quarterfinal berth via a series of mammoth backside hacks.
Round 5 Heat 2 Sebastian Zietz vs. Taj Burrow
With his “win or lose we booze” motto Seabass is nonstop fun. Well this party ain’t stopping as Seabass wins with yet another buzzer beater. He’s becoming the master of last minute heroics. I have a cold one waiting for him at the Tavarua bar when he arrives. Was Seabass your New Era X Volcom Fiji Pro MVP of the day? If so vote for him tomorrow morning (West Coast USA time) on our Facebook page.
Round 5 Heat 3 Josh Kerr vs. Nat Young
Josh Kerr has surprisingly never got a perfect 10 on the World Tour and was lamenting the fact to me as we caddied during Jordy and John John’s heat. That streak unfortunately continues with a 9.8 against Nat. Will it make you feel better knowing that the American judge gave you a 10 Kerrzy?
Round 5 Heat 4 Mick Fanning vs. Kolohe Andino
Mick shows what Two Time World Champs do—make it to the quarters or better in every event. “Every f—kin’ time!” rants Mitch Coleborn as we slurp down rum and cokes at the Tavarua bar. With that, the contest os over for the day and happy hour commences. I trudge off to the media zone…—JC
