Event Preview: 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro
What: 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro; a $450,000 ASP World Championship Tour surf contest
Where: The event can be run at two locations; Cloudbreak and Restaurants. Both are left hand reef breaks off the Fijian island of Viti Levu. Cloudbreak can handle swells up to 25-feet (like we saw last year) while Restaurants is simply the most perfect tube in the world yet can “only” handle surf up to eight feet. With those two locations, it’s a win/win for surfers and viewers alike.
When:The waiting period lasts from June 2-14, 2013 and will run on the four days with the best surf.
Who: The world’s best competitive surfers from the World Championship Tour (WCT). Those 34 surfers will be joined by a Fijian wildcard and Volcom wildcard making for a 36-man field.
Hands down the best WCT event of 2012, it will be tough to replicate the excitement and buzz that surrounded the event as waves up to 25-feet slammed into the reef at Cloudbreak, forcing contest officials to call off the event, but making for an amazing display of big wave riding that was broadcast live. But if there’s anywhere in the world that can reproduce such excitement, drama, and heart-stopping action, it’s Cloudbreak and Restaurants.
In 2012 Kelly Slater won the event with upstart Brazilian rookie Gabriel Medina finishing runner up. This year it figures to be anyone’s title to win, but you have to consider last year’s finalists as threats to repeat. Along with Slater and Medina, the Hobgood bros have to be considered a threat as well as John John Florence (his ankle is good to go), Owen Wright, Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow, Parko, and injury replacement surfer Fred Patacchia.
The event will be broadcast live to the world via volcomfijipro.com. Stay tuned to transworldsurf.com for event coverage, results, photos, and video! As well, follow us on instagram at transworld_surf as well as on Vine @TransWorld SURF.
