This one’s for those small, clean days at Off The Wall or Backdoor. I’ve been riding quads for about five years. We came up with a little different setup that works really good. The fins are a little closer together. It rides more like a thruster and turns insane, but has the speed of a four-fin.

This one’s a full Backdoor model. I rode it that first real good day this winter when it was six to eight foot.

My shaper Will Scovel from Kauai came over and rode this board and kind of ruled me! He caught a bomb at Pipe on this thing. He rips! I used to battle him in contests—from menehune all the way to juniors—and now he’s my shaper. He’s the next Wade Tokoro, the future of Hawaiian shaping.

All these boards are dead set for the North Shore, and really only for in between Rockpiles to Ehukai [surf spots on the North Shore]. I could never surf Sunset because my boards are all made for Pipe. I’d surf Sunset on Pipe boards and they’d just bog.

This is for as big as Pipe gets. I haven’t ridden it yet, but this is the one I’m looking forward to riding. I’m sure I’ll ride it in January though. I like those rail channels. They help keep them from breaking. I think it breaks the line when the board is flexing. A lot of my boards will crack on the rail, but they won’t break all the way across.

The Cage
MMA training has definitely made my surfing stronger. I feel like my turns are more powerful. It took me away from surfing for a little while, but now I feel more solid than ever on my board. A lot of the stuff I do is pure legs and core, so it’s perfect for surfing.
