OCEANSIDE, CA (August 9, 2012) – Day one of the three-day Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro —the largest all-women’s surf contest in the world — wrapped Thursday afternoon as 80 of the world’s top female surfers converged in Oceanside, Calif. Spectators lined the beach to watch the ASP 6-Star event as the field was narrowed to 48 competitors. Among those to advance are pros Malia Manuel, Sage Erickson and Courtney Conlogue.
Conlogue, 19, posted the day’s highest heat total of 16.23 out of 20. The talented Californian was equally effective on both the lefts and rights today, unloading deadly combinations on both her forehand and backhand for a pair of 8-point scores.
“I was happy to have a strong start,” Conlogue said. “I was trying to just warm up for the rest of the event and I had to put a good show on because Ornella (Pellizzari) was having a good heat. It feels good to move on straight from the last event and I’m feeling good out there.”
The competition continues Friday (10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Saturday (11:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). The Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro is free and open to the public and features athlete meet and greets, giveaways and complimentary hair styling on-site by Paul Mitchell.
