Peru Announces ISA World Junior Championships Team

With Three Former Medalists on the Roster, Peruvians Set to Defend Team Gold in the World´s Largest and Most Important Junior Surfing Competition

Playa Venao, Panama

After a year of IPD National Junior Tour competition and two months of hard team training, the Peruvian Surfing Federation (FENTA) announced the country’s roster which will travel to Panama to defend last year’s Gold at the DAKINE ISA World Junior Surfing Championship Presented by Billabong.

Over 300 juniors competed on the Tour, from which 24 were selected, and from that smaller group the top 12 will compete at Playa Venao to defend the Peruvian colors at the largest and most important under-18 surfing event in the world.
The team that was selected should be a formidable one. In the Boys Under-18 division, Peru has three surfers who were medalists at the 2011 ISA World Juniors in Peru. Miguel Tudela was the Under-18 Copper Medalist, Joaquín del Castillo won the Bronze Medal in the Under-16 and Juninho Urcia won the Copper Medal in the same division. Surfing alongside that trio will be the talented and contest-proven Carlos Mario Zapata, who placed sixth last year.

“I’m so happy to be part of the team again, this is another great opportunity for me. The squad is really motivated, united and willing to fight to win another Gold; we’re going to give our best to make that happen,” said Urcia, who is also an ISA Scholarship winner for five straight years. “I won a Copper Medal last year and I want to improve that result this year. The level [of competition at this event] is strong and I respect that, so I’m going to have to give my best. I would also like to thank the ISA for the five years that they have supported me through the scholarship program in the developing of my skills.”

The Boys Under-16 roster will include Lucca Messinas, who is the only ISA experienced competitor among the group; in 2011 Messinas placed 25th in the ISA World Juniors. Talented newcomers Alonso Correa, Adrián García and Lucca Saldivar will join him. The local Peruvian media recently featured Saldivar after he became one of the youngest surfers to surf the massive waves of Peru’s Pico Alto.

“It’s an honor for me to be part of this Peruvian Team that will defend the Gold. We have a great squad with great talented surfers,” said Correa, the top seed. “Our team is prepared to be World Champions. We have been training hard with two amazing coaches in Gabriel Aramburú and Renato Quezada. I’m hoping for the waves to be good and I will give everything I have.”

Each of the four Peruvian women has experience in ISA events. Miluska Tello, Vania Torres, Melanie Giunta and Belu Quispe were a part of last year’s ISA World Juniors Gold Medal-winning team. Torres had the most success in the event, placing 13th; Giunta, Quispe and Junior National Champion Tello placed equal-31st.

The DAKINE ISA World Junior Surfing Championship Presented by Billabong begins on April 14 with the traditional ISA Opening Ceremony, which includes a Parade of Nations and the Sands of the World Ceremony. Competition will begin on the morning of the 15th. The Opening Ceremony and the competition can be viewed live at www.dakineisawjsc.com/live.
