Nic Muscroft Wins Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Trials
Muscroft wins Wingman Men’s Trials at pumping Bells Beach to claim his third Rip Curl Pro wildcard
April 2, 2012 – Nic Muscroft (29, Jan Juc, Vic.) has topped an elite eight-man field of Victoria’s top surfers to claim the second and final wildcard berth into the 2012 Rip Curl Pro presented by Ford.
In near-perfect 3 to 4 foot (1-1.5 meter) offshore conditions at Bells Beach, Muscroft defeated Jack Perry (27, Jan Juc, Vic.) in the final on Monday. Muscroft unleashed a powerful assault of deep frontside rail turns on the long, roping walls on offer at Bells, racking up a pair of 8-point rides. He would finish the final with highest total heat score of the trials, a 16.67 (out of a possible 20 points), putting him out of reach of fellow Surf Coaster and good mate Perry, who finished with a combined total heat score of 13.4.
“It was a tough heat,” Muscroft said of the final. “Jack was ripping all day. He’s my best mate and we surf together all the time. Unfortunately only one of us could move on.” Muscroft, currently ranked No. 27 on the Association of Surfing Professionals world rankings, won every heat on his way to capturing the trials. It was his third trials victory at the Rip Curl Pro.
“Today was one of the better days at Bells in a long time,” Muscroft said. “It was good to have a man-on-man heat out there. I’ve never surfed a trials heat at the Bowl before, usually we’re at Rincon. The CT guys were probably pretty jealous watching us surf man-on-man out there today.”
Muscroft will face Taj Burrow (33, AUS), fresh off a victory at the first ASP World Tour stop of the year at Snapper Rocks, and rookie sensation Kolohe Andino (17, USA) in Round 1 of the main event.
The Rip Curl Pro is presented by Ford, in partnership with the Victorian Government, Telstra, Tooheys Extra Dry, Jim Beam, Sea-Doo, Skullcandy, Surf Coast Shire, Tracks, Fuel TV, Ozmosis, Official Forecaster Coastalwatch Plus and co-managed by Surfing Victoria.
