The 9th Annual Ian Walsh’s ‘Menehune Mayhem’ Goes Bigger Than Ever At Ho’okipa Beach Park

HO‘OKIPA, MAUI (March TKTK, 2012) – Everything was bigger at Ho‘okipa Beach Park for the 9th Annual Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem than previous years. The all-day, free junior surf event was bombarded with wave face heights in the 8-to 12-foot range. The surf was triple overhead for most of the young competitors and tested their mettle. Considering that Ian Walsh is one of the world’s best big wave surfers, the conditions for the 9th Annual Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem were fitting.

“It’s probably six-feet solid, North/Northeast swell with 30 mph trade winds: ‘Maui Glass,’” says Ian Walsh, who grew up surfing at Ho‘okipa. “The good thing about Ho‘okipa is you can surf as a seven-year-old kid on the inside because it has a little reform and it’s completely safe on the inside. The big kids can go out and have whatever they want and go as big as they want to go. On the inside it’s super safe and protected for the little guys.”

In addition to the big surf, the 9th Annual Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem contest site and autograph session was also bigger than the past years. Professional surfers Bruce Irons and Shane Dorian, who both organize their own surf contests for kids on Kauai and the Big Island, came to Ho‘okipa to sign autographs and stoke out the groms with Walsh. The activities at the contest site grew exponentially from previous years with a fitness center, live music from Visibly Shaken, DJ Eskae spinning, scavenger hunt and an art center.

“This event expanded this year to create a place for kids– even if they’re not super excited to surf or confident enough in their abilities to get out there and compete with the other kids– it’s a place where they can come and just have a good day,” says Walsh. “Jumping castle. Dunk tank. We have an art center, which has been a huge hit this year: painting t-shirts, canvases and rocks and more or less just letting the kids be creative and have fun.”

While the 9th Annual Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem is all about surfing and a fun for the kids, competitors were also rewarded for their academics. School was always a big part of Ian’s life and he always encourages the younger surfers to strive for academic excellence. “I think academics are a big part of it,” says Walsh who graduated from King Kekaulike High School as valedictorian in 2001. “School is something they’ll take with them throughout their whole lives, everything they’ll learn in the next 10 years. It was something that was always super important to me that I grew up under through my parents and brothers. So I just want to reward them, some of the best prizes I have in this whole event is for the highest GPA. You can see after nine years that kids are just striving for that point to get to that GPA where they win a board, an iPod or something fun.”
