All the rosters for the ISA China Cup are confirmed. Most of the teams have already arrived in China to begin familiarizing themselves with the left-hand pointbreak wave at Riyue Bay, for the Hainan Wanning Riyue Bay International Surfing Festival Presented by Quiksilver. With a solid groundswell in the water, and howling offshore winds, conditions are ideal for the lead-up to what will certainly be an exciting and groundbreaking event.

“I am so happy that the eight National Teams have traveled thousands of miles and many days to get to China. This event is certainly going to be an exciting and memorable time for everyone involved and the surfing tribe around the world” said Fernando Aguerre, the ISA President. “The Opening Ceremony is Saturday, the competition starts on Sunday, so the surfers have been practicing in the good waves all day long. The energy level is very high, and the locals are all very curious about all the athletes roaming around town…I wish we could start the event today.”

This is an unprecedented happening in China, a country of 1.3 billion people and 9,000-plus miles of coastline with very little surf culture to speak of. The plan is for the Festival to serve as the initial spark in nurturing surfing in China. The Festival is the joint work of the ISA and Womei Media, which is a Beijing sports and media organization.

The two-event Festival opens on Saturday, January 7, with the ISA China Cup and concludes on January 14 with the final day of competition for the Hainan Classic, an ASP Men’s 4-Star produced by the ISA. The Festival schedule begins with a media press conference at the 6-star Le Meridien Hotel, near the contest site. It will include an 8-person panel, including Aguerre, Dunhao Yang (CEO of Womei Media), executives from the Local Organizing Committee, and three of the athletes competing in the ISA China Cup.

At 5:30pm, the ISA’s traditional Opening Ceremony will commence, beginning with the Parade of the Nations and the Sands of the World Ceremony, which will also be held at the Le Meridian.

The four-day ISA China Cup will feature the finest surfers from the top eight qualifying countries, based on the results of the 2011 ISA World Surfing Games. National Team surfers will include former World Tour competitors Chris Ward and Cory Lopez for the USA, former ISA and ASP world champion Sofia Mulanovich of Peru, ISA gold medalist Pauline Ado of France, who will soon begin her second year on the ASP Women’s World Tour, and Dion Atkinson from Australia, who is one of the top surfers on the ASP Men’s Tour, among many talented others. Current World Surfing Games champion, Santiago Muniz from Argentina, is also in the competition.

Competing at a wave and in a country none of the competitors or coaches are familiar with, since arriving, the surfers have spent the majority of their time either studying the break, or running down the beach in their wetsuit, with their board under their arm for some first-hand experience.

“The waves have been really fun so far; some long rides,” says Cristobal de Col, who’s the defending ISA junior champion and competing for Team Peru. “It’s supposed to get bigger and there might even be some barrels on low tide.” Each country will field a National Team of 4 men and 2 women vying for team and individual gold medals. Many of the teams are comprised of ISA veterans and a few newcomers to ISA competition.
