Behind The Cover: Flynn Novak’s “Flynnstone Flip” At Rocky Point
As much as we wanted an image of one of the young rippers from the Who’s Now/Who’s Next list to appear on our cover, when this sequence of Flynn Novak came in, it was pretty much decided on sight that this had to be a cover. Flynn landed his first “Flynnstone” flip a few years ago, and now he’s pulling them with more consistency, more amplitude, and even doing them as functional maneuvers to clear sections. At first glance this photo looks like a pullout, an unmakeable fly away that would warrant a few “oohs” and “ahhs” from an untrained crowd, but not a make, right? Wrong. The proof is in the pudding. “I’ve done maybe 20 of these flips,” says Flynn. “I’ve only had a few actually documented—this one is one of my favorites.”
Flynn’s wave of choice for flips like this is Rocky Point, which also happens to be his backyard. “Sometimes the wind at Rocky Point is absolutely perfect for airs like this,” said Flynn. “This day was one of the best air wind days I’ve seen in a long time. I’m just stoked that I rode away from it and the photographer was in the right place at the right time.” For the record, he was riding a Surftech 6’1” x 18 5/8” x 2 5/16” Simon Anderson XFC Ultraflex model. Thanks to Graham Nash for the nailing the clip, too!
Flynn Novak is a working class surfer who should get much more coverage than he gets. Congrats on the cover, Flynn, you deserve it.—Chris Coté
