Rip Curl Pro Portugal: Editor Picks

Editor-In-Chief: Chris Cote
Winner: Julian Wilson will win this event, he’s been getting too close, ripping too hard, and getting a bit underscored. If Portugal is wedging and there are ramps available, JW will take this thing. If not him, can Taylor Knox please win? Please.
Shocker: The “tennis tour” rookies will come out blazing again, knocking fools out of the water.
Who will Rip: Taylor Knox will carve the living shit out of some Portuguese wedges. Mick Fanning will get pissed off, and do some damage. You know who else surfs really good in big draining beachbreaks, John John—his nerves are calmed by now and he’s about to go to Portugal and get nuts.
Who will Slip: This is the last contest that I will offer the Taylor Knox tattoo if he wins. So Taylor, if you win, I’ll get a Taylor Knox tattoo, if you don’t we’re gonna have to figure out a different way to get you on my body—that sounded weird.

Winner: Mick Fanning. He let my prediction down in France so I’m even more confident about Portugal.
Shocker: Kelly loses early when the ASP realizes their computers have been accidentally adding an extra point to his scores all year. Ke1111111111y.
Who Will Rip: Parko will rip his suit to shreds if he loses early again. He won’t. I think.
Who Will Slip: Hopefully not Tiago. I want to see the beach go bonkers if he wins. That would be really cool.

Winner: Besides the obvious (Slater, who won last year), I’m gonna get all nutz and say Brett Simpson. He charged in Tahiti, ripped in France, and has won big comps before. I think he gets his first world tour win here.
Shocker: Owen Wright will break his entire quiver in a heat this year.
Who will Rip: I was just watching that part in Secret Machine where Damien Hobgood tears the goddam bag out of a macking beachbreak in France (28 minutes in). It’s some of the most aggressive, fine-tuned shredding of big and tricky surf I’ve ever seen. If it’s big and draining, Damien can run that comp.
Who will Slip: The guys that have slipped this year got clipped off tour. However, Dan Ross has four last places in a row, and might add a fifth.

Associate Editor: Zander Morton
Winner: Gabriel Medina. It’s the obvious, he’s-so-hot-right-now pick, but we all saw what he’s capable of in beachbreaks. I’m claiming another finals appearance, at the very least.
Shocker: Owen Wright loses early, allowing Kelly to coast to his 11th title in San Francisco next month.
Who will Rip: Jordy Smith. He made the final last year, and easily could again. Judging from his performance in France, that rib injury is healing just fine.
Who will Slip: Parko, again, if he keeps putting forth such uninspired performances. Where’s that fiery competitiveness been since Bells?

Winner: Owen Wright. He is just mentally and physically so on fire right now. Coming off 3 finals with 1 win he just has the momentum on his side along with his new coach. Having a team of guys helping you emotionally and physically at your side I think helps a lot. He is off the party train and just has everything in his corner right now.
Shocker: Dane Reynolds showing up, but with the “I don’t care attitude”.
Who will Rip: Julian Wilson and Josh Kerr because the wedgey little beach breaks will be a great opportunity to take things into the air.
Who will Slip: If the contest is at big super tubes I will say the young guys, but if the contest is elsewhere the older guys will slip. The ones who don’t have the tricks

TransWorld SURF Intern/Captain of the UCSD Surf Team: Kokoro Tomatsuri
Winner: Julian Wilson because he’s been building up this whole year and he’s found a rhythm, After he got second he’s more fired up then ever.
Shocker: Kelly Slater, It always seems to be a dramatic end for Kelly, it would be too easy if he won this one.
Who will Rip: If it’s tubing, John John and Owen are gonna kill it. If it’s mushy and weird, Josh Kerr or Taj Burrow will kill it.
Who will Slip: Jordy, his injury, pressure to do well make him make bad decisions.
