With Andy Irons looking down from heaven with a devilish grin on his face, the swell of the year slams right into the world’s heaviest wave.
Why ‘Code Red’? That was the term for the marine warning the Tahitian government instituted late Friday afternoon and into Saturday. It basically shut down all marinas and ports as the swell peaked. Boats snuck out here and there, but others were given tickets for attempting to get out to the pass. After a few hours of confusion Saturday morning, the cops bailed the scene and the channel was wide open for anyone who had the balls to take it on. Props to the surfers who tackled the historic day, and thank the big man above nobody was seriously injured.
