Teahupo‘o Super Swell: The Day Of Days
Since Mark Healey has already given me some shit for calling it “the biggest day ever,” let’s just say that Saturday, August 27 was as big as it gets here at Teahupo‘o. Having just come in from sitting in the channel for four hours, I’m at a loss for words. How people didn’t die I don’t know. Here are a few of the more memorable moments…
-Bruce Irons had his trunks ripped off and took a bare-ass victory lap through the channel.
-Maya Gabeira got whipped into a smaller (relative to the sets) wave, got barreled, and kicked out into the channel only to see one of the biggest waves of the day break right in front of her. Check the video above; about 2/3 of the way through. She was in a really bad spot but got rescued by Poto. It took her a while to get her breath but she’s okay now.I don’t think she should have been out there, the girl nearly died and was way out of her league.
-Freddy P, Julian Wilson, and Ricardo Dos Santos were the lone surfers who are in the event to tackle the massive surf.
-Raimana Van Bastolaer injured his back on his first wave, ripping through his thick safety vest. Hope he’s feeling better.
-The worst injury of the day happened to a Brazilian guy named “Gordo” who slammed his face and knee into the reef. Dude was a bloody mess.
-What struck me was that despite the fact that most of the best big wave surfers and the cream of the ASP World Tour crop is here, there were only a handful of tow teams out there. It seems a lot of guys got a few waves, thanked their lucky stars, and got the hell outta there. Good call. Laurie Towner and Dylan Longbottom are the exception—they’ve been out all day.
