11 Year Tradition lives on at Lower Trestles, San Onofre State Beach, CA
San Juan Capistrano, Calif. – June 23, 2011 – Surfing America, the National Governing Body for surfing in the United States, is pleased to announce that the California Governor’s Cup returns to this year’s Quiksilver USA Championships event at Lower Trestles, San Onofre State Beach, CA. Champions in the Boys Under 18 and Girls Under 18 Divisions will receive this prestigious award thanks to California Governor Jerry Brown and California State Parks.
“California State Parks is pleased to welcome the 11th annual Governor’s Cup heats as part of Surfing America’s USA Championships being held this week at San Onofre State Beach, Lower Trestles, and extends congratulations and best wishes to the outstanding student-athletes participating in this year’s event,” said Richard Haydon, SPSIII, South Sector Superintendent of California State Parks Orange Coast District.
The final two days of the event–tomorrow and Saturday–will be available to watch via Live Webcast at www.surfline.com/quikusachamps
The Quiksilver USA Championships is the leading event in American surfing; organizations that feed their top athletes up into the event include the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA), the Western Surfing Association (WSA), and the Hawaii Surfing Association (HSA). The event stands above all others thanks to the level of athletes competing, its world class venue, high caliber judging panels, live webcast, and exclusive use of four-person, twenty-minute heats.
“We’re deeply honored to present the Governor’s Cup again at this year’s event,” said Mike Gerard, Surfing America’s executive director. “It’s an amazing and prestigious award that will most certainly be a lifelong, cherished accomplishment for two athletes who receive it on Saturday. As the very best young surfers in the United States are in the event, the winners of the Governor’s Cup are most indeed worthy of the honor bestowed upon them.”
The California Governor’s Cup awards will be presented immediately following the event finals on Saturday June 25th.
Later that evening, on June 25th, the 2012 PacSun USA Surf Team will be formally introduced at a special announcement and fundraiser event in San Clemente. The 2012 PacSun USA Surf Team will represent the United States next year at the 2012 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.
