Spyder Surffest

Hermosa Beach, Ca- Spyder Surfboards is proud to announce a star studded line up for the Sun Bum Spyder Surf Fest presented by Mammoth Mountain, Sanuk Footwear, Rockstar Energy Drink, and Havoc.TV Saturday, April 9th on the Hermosa Beach Pier Plaza.  Following the success of the last three years, Spyder Surfboards has again joined forces with the City of Hermosa Beach and the Southern California Surf Industry for another exciting Legends of Surf Weekend.

The Legends of Surf Weekend kicks off on Friday night April 8th at the Hermosa Beach Community Playhouse with Billabongs presentation of gold recording artist Donovan Frankenreiter playing a live acoustic set. Following Donovan, Wade Goodall will premiere his new surf film “Creative Destruction”. And finally, the South Bay Boardriders Club in conjunction with Big Wave Hellman Greg Long (Eddie Akiau Winner, XXL Award Winner) will present the award for the “South Bay Big Wave Challenge”, honoring the surfer that caught the biggest wave of the winter and the photographer that captured the image of it.  Both before and after the movie there will be food, drinks, more live music and a silent auction to benefit the Hermosa Beach Historical Surfing Museum.

Saturday morning at 8:00am on the Southside of the Hermosa Pier, The California High School Surfing Championships will bring together 16 of the best High School Surf Teams, from up and down the coast, to compete against each other for the title of best High School Surf Team.

At 9:30am The Jimmy Miller Foundation will be treating members of the Wounded Warriors Organization to surf lessons at the Hermosa Pier.

At 11:00am, the City of Hermosa Beach will host the induction of the 2 newest members to The Surfers Walk of Fame – Dick Mobley and Tom Rice.  Mobley, a third generation Hermosa Beach native, shaped surfboards for the top surfboard companies for 17 years through the 50’s and 60’s before opening his own store and building the Mobley Surfboard.  Tom Rice is a legendary South Bay waterman.  Rice and Mobley join Surfing Pioneers and South Bay greats previously inducted including; Greg Noll, Bing Copeland, Hap Jacobs, Donald Takayama, Dewey Weber, Leroy Grannis, Dale Velzy and more, when their bronze plaques are set into the Hermosa Beach Pier.

Then at 1pm sharp the Sun Bum Spyder Surf Fest will kick off featuring five live bands on the main stage, at the base of the Hermosa Beach Pier – Fortunate Youth, Whispering Eyes, The Hermosa Beach All Stars (featuring ex-members of the Beach Boys), new sensations Suedehead fresh off their tour with Social Distortion, and finally headlining will be Grammy nominated Everclear.  Also appearing on the main stage will be the ever-popular Spyder Girls fashion show, showcasing the latest in girls and guys beach fashion.

“This year we’re taking the event up another notch. We’ve got amazing music coming in with all the bands involved but both Suedehead and Everclear will surely be memorable for me. I’ve always been an Everclear fan through all their radio play and to have them in Hermosa Beach playing to a free audience is pretty amazing”- said Spyder Surfboard’s owner and shaper Dennis Jarvis.

Surrounding the stage, the pier plaza will be packed with promotional teams and industry leaders from the biggest and best surf brands, including Hurley, Billabong, Quiksilver, Volcom, Electric, Rip Curl, Roxy, Sanuk, and many, many more. There will be free giveaways, fun games, great vibes, and a raffle to benefit the Wounded Warriors Organizations.
