Mauli Ola Foundation Golf Tourney

mof
Mauli Ola Foundation and Sponsor Me hope you can make it to our 4th Annual “Surfers for Cystic Fibrosis” golf tournament fundraiser being held at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, CA on August 2nd, 2011 (Tuesday). Sunny Garcia (2000 World Surfing Champion) is hosting this year.

Last year’s golf tournament at Monarch Beach sold out (144 players) and this year will not be any different. Top executives from biotech (Ambry Genetics, Roche, Agilent, RainDance, Ion Torrent) and surf companies (Sponsor Me, Quiksilver, Volcom, Billabong, Etnies, Silver Star, Hurley, Nike 6.0, Fuel TV, Flexfit and others) came out to support the cause along with many professional surfers like Makua Rothman (last year’s host), Sunny Garcia, Bruce Irons, Julian Wilson, Dusty Payne, Fred Patacchia Jr., Kalani Robb, Kala Alexander and many others. We host our event during the US Open of surfing in HB to allow for all the surfers to make it to our golf tourney. We will also have news and media coverage of the event.

We are looking for sponsors, donations (for silent auction and raffle prizes) and team entries. We expect the tournament to sell out fast, so sign up early to claim your spot! Also, if you know of others that would like to play in this golf tournament, please pass this email onto them. Thank you!

All forms can also be found by going to www.mauliola.org/golf.

Please contact Steve Swanson if you have any questions about the tournament. sswanson@mauliola.org

Additional Event Information:
CF Surf Experience Days were created to get kids and young adults who suffer from the lifelong debilitating disorder of Cystic Fibrosis, which primarily affects the lungs, out into the ocean where they can benefit from the natural ocean air. It has been discovered that breathing in hypertonic saline (salty water air) helps breakdown the congestion that lines the lungs, thereby allowing for the release of the mucus and inevitably breathe easier. Through the constant work of foundations such as Mauli Ola, better treatments and eventually a cure are hopefully in the near future. Your support at the golf tournament provides surf experience days for people with Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary genetic disease. Because of this, there is no risk of “catching” CF from another person with CF. Approximately 1 in 20 people in the United States are carriers of CF, which makes it the most common genetic defect of its severity in the United States. The name of the gene that leads to CF is known as CFTR and this gene creates a specific protein. This protein controls the flow of chloride ions across the cell membrane. People with CF suffer from chronic lung problems and digestive disorders. Many people with CF require frequent hospitalizations and constant use of antibiotics, enzyme supplements and other medications. People with CF used to have a life expectancy that was very short. 30 years ago the average life expectancy was about 8 years and today people with the disease can now expect to live well into adulthood.

Surf Experience Days are organized through the Mauli Ola Foundation with special assistance provided by surf schools and surf industry companies. Each participant at the surf school is paired up with a professional surf instructor who gives water safety training and surf lessons prior to entering the water. Typical events last between 2-3 hours and are offered during summer time conditions. We encourage all people who have CF to sign up for Surf Experience Days to be a part of something life changing. Our prior events have been extraordinarily remarkable with surf participants looking forward to future CF Surf Experience Days. All CF Surf Experience Days are free for anyone with Cystic Fibrosis.
