I recently spent a week in Peru with surf photographer and Kauai shark attack survivor Mike Coots. While I’d read about his story before, it wasn’t until we had shared some waves together and knocked back a few Cusquena’s that I really got to know him. To say he’s an inspiration would be a gross understatement—the dude is a straight up legend! Much like Bethany Hamilton and others before him, Coots didn’t let the loss of his leg slow him down—in fact, he didn’t start surfing until after that fateful day on the West side of Kauai.—Justin Coté
