The highlight of the night (at least for someone like me who didn't win anything) was the bus ride up to Anaheim (yes, Anaheim) on Vestal's pimped out tour bus.

For the eighth year in a row, the surf industry got together to tell ourselves how rad we are. The SIMA Image Awards used to be held during a booze-filled “conference” in Cabo San Lucas, but for some reason, the show got moved to that surf industry hub known as Anaheim. We motored up there with the bros from Vestal, and upon our somewhat buzzed arrival were greeted by hordes of families leaving Disneyland. I was hoping to see Mickey Mouse but had to make do with some guy from Fuel TV doing interviews dressed as a gorilla (think about that the next time you complain about your job).

Party time at the House Of Blues!

Party time at the House Of Blues!

There weren’t too many surprises as far as the rewards go. The Dumpster Diver from Channel Islands won an award for the raddest board, Hurley’s Phantom boardshort was deemed the best pair of trunks, and Xcel was named best wetsuit. While the folks from those companies were stoked, boos rained down from the cheap seats (where the TWS crew was sequestered) when Olukai was named “Breakthrough Brand Of The Year.” Talk about sore losers! I spotted one surf company executive storm out of the party muttering something about “the sad state of the industry.” Overall, it’s always good to see some bros and rub shoulders with industry heavy hitters, but jeez, Anaheim? Let’s get real and bring it back to Cabo!
